Mary's Story

Hello classmates! After high school I went to Plattsburgh State 78-83. I was fortunate to work at the 1980 winter olympics as a bartender in the hockey arena. I was there for the gold metal game, opening and closing ceremonies, saw Eric Heiden win his golds. Very amazing experience- the ultimate natural high! I swam 2 years in college but got injured and worked as a student athletic trainer, traveled with all different teams but most memorable with the men's hockey team to nationals 3 times and in the summer, the Empire State Games. I worked through college also as a lifeguard and swim instructor, as a NYS lifeguard at Long Point State Park. Once I graduated with a BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) I worked in the ER at Jamestown General Hospital (no longer there) for 5 months until I joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp. I was active duty in San Diego for 4 yrs, reserve another 4, then I resigned my commission. I met my husband Dwight in the Navy. We married Jan 1985, he remained active duty surface line until he retired as a Commander in 1999. We moved to Northern Va (D.C. area) for 2 years while he helped to start up an office for corrosion engineering services. When he was offered a consultant position back in San Diego, north island, we were very happy to return. Sadly, Dwight developed NASH (non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis). It is a silent, fatty liver disease. His type is rare, he also had some genetic deficiencies. By the time he was diagnosed, he was in end stage (4). He w...Expand for more
as worked up by the Navy, Scripps Hospital, and was #1 on the transplant list for a liver for 17 days when he died Oct 17, 2004. He was 49 years old. At that time my kids were 11 and 13. It was a very rough time for us- his sister died 9 months before that (Jan 2004) at age 44 from complications of Hepatitis C. It was after her death when Dwight got diagnosed. Kristina, our daughter, was born in Monterey, Ca in 1991 when Dwight was at the Naval Postgraduate school, and Nathan was born in 1993 at Naval Hospital San Diego. My last 6 months of active duty I finally made it to Neonatal Intensive Care and have worked in that field ever since. We have had some very hard times, but I'm happy to say we are now doing well. This summer (2008) flew by with Kristina traveling as a sports ambassador for People to People to New Zealand, Australia and Figi and Nathan at surf camp. Of course our awesome 30 year high school reunion was a very big highlight of the summer, getting in touch with so many people I haven't seen in 30 years! Hurray to Don Scott for all his efforts! The other highlight for me was the opportunity to go snorkeling with whale sharks outside of Cancun area. That was a dream come true for me and Kristina! So incredible! So aloha to everyone. Please feel free to get in touch if you are coming to San Diego area! We live in Ramona, CA which is north east of SD, where we did experience 2 horrific fires, but thanks to firefighters our home is still here! Take care, Mary (Barry) Wilson
