Mary's Story

I went to France in February 1968 with a one-way ticket. I had $1,200.00 in savings. My intention was to find a job in Germany where there were many US Army bases. Stayed in Paris for 6 weeks then left for sunny Spain along the Costa del Sol. I stayed in a small beach town, Torremolinos. When the weekend came around, the town was full of soldiers/sailors. Where did all these American guys with military buzz cuts come from? Much to my surprise, there was, and still is, a Navy base west of Cadiz. Most of the guys on the base spent their weekends in Torremolinos. I hitched a ride to the base and applied for a job. I had been a Feder...Expand for more
al employee in Philadelphia with the Army Corps of Engineers. I resigned that position to go to Europe. I met my husband, Curt Smith, on the base a few months after I started working there. All together, I was there for a little over 2 years. Other places I've lived: Berkeley, CA Santa Monica, CA Laguna Niguel, Orange County, CA Sacramento,CA Fort Collins, Colorado Scottsdale, AZ Moraga, CA (Bay Area) Scottsdale AZ Paradise Valley, AZ Flagstaff, AZ - We have a second house in Flagstaff to avoid the summer heat. P.S. I don't recommend travel to Torremolinos. We went back in 1999. Torremolinos was ugly and dirty and not at all nice.
