Mary Pat's Story
TJ Society News-University of Virginia
Last spring, Mary Pat Dixon was one of several graduates who returned to Grounds for her 50th class reunion and her induction into the Thomas Jefferson Society.
Mary Pat moved to Washington, DC, after graduating in 1960 with a bachelorâÃÂÃÂs degree in education and took her first job teaching fourth graders in northern Virginia. She then headed to Heibronn, Germany, for two years of teaching third grade in the Overseas DependentsâÃÂàSchools. She returned to the states, taking a position in a Boston, Massachusetts suburb, where she worked within the local school system in various capacities for the next 20 years. She earned a Master of Education degree in reading at Northeastern University in Boston, a Master of Education degree in special education at Boston State College and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study degree in educational administration at Northeastern University. After a very full and productive two-decades-long career in Burlington, teaching at all grade levels, first through twelft...Expand for more
h, she retired in 1984.
âÃÂÃÂAt the beginning, I only wanted to be a good elementary school classroom teacher,âÃÂàMary Pat says.ÃÂàâÃÂÃÂAs time progressed, I would see that the instruction and guidance I received at the University of Virginia gave me invaluable tools and experience that would serve me well throughout an interesting and fulfilling career.âÃÂÃÂ
Mary Pat still lives in Boston, Massachusetts, where she operates Mary Pat Enterprises, dealing in oriental rugs, antiques and jewelry. She says she especially enjoyed returning to U.Va. and attending the Curry SchoolâÃÂÃÂs TJ Society luncheon because it was heart-warming to be with other educators who were enthused about teaching. Education is a national priority. There is nothing more important to our national safety than shaping the minds, the character and behavior of our youths. Being in those beautiful Jeffersonian surroundings, where it all began for me, made me want to return to work, to the worthwhile endeavor of helping the next generation grow up.
