Mary-Ellen's Story
In August 2014 I will celebrate 47 years of marriage to my high school sweetheart, Bill, a '64 graduate of Mainland High. Our college years and careers led us to live the first 13 years in the Midwest, PA, and then New England. Then we enjoyed an international career with our four children for almost 20 years in the former Zaire, Africa, now Democratic Republic of Congo. Of necessity we learned Swahili and French and had the privilege to study at the Sorbonne, University of Paris. When civil war made it impossible to stay in Congo, we returned to the USA to settle in 1999. We maintain strong ties with the university in DR Congo, where we both taught.
Our next 12 years were back in South Jersey, where Bill entered a business partnership developing safety equipment for the transit industry and I taught high school French in Haddon Heights, As a result of Bill's business, our Congo career and my teach...Expand for more
ing, we have been avid travelers to over 25 countries and expect to visit others.
Currently we are enjoying life in South Carolina, hunting fishing and boating and where we are happy to have our two daughters' families and four of our six grandchildren nearby. A son lives with his wife and two children in NY State.
My life has brought frequent changes, cultural adjustments and surprises, continual learning, exploration and growing. I've known loss: the death of our 20 year old son, the complete pillaging of our household in the war in Zaire and the accompanying loss of career and colleagues when we had to leave Zaire. Such things cannot be replaced, but I've known exquisite compensation. The constant that has made these years a journey of deep joy has been the faith that my husband and I share in God whose "love is great, reaching the heavens"; and whose "faithfulness reaches the skies." Psalm 57:10
