Mary's Story

I attended Memorial High School in Houston, TX my Freshman and Sophomore years, 1965 - 1967. Our family moved to Oklahoma City during the summer of 1967 so I finished high school at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City. I attended OSU immediately after high school and transfered to OU second semester of my sophomore year. I got a B.A. in Speech Communication at OU. I continued my education at OU to work on my Masters before embarking on a career. I know there is a God because I survived my twenties including all levels of stupid. Following college I worked for Hesston Corporation, Campbell Filter Company and the Bank of Oklahoma before I got married and had my children. I stayed home for over four years with my kids before going back to work for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma in 1984. I retired in September 2006 after 22 years with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma. I had a very eclectic career with BCBSOK, having been hired initially as a part of an implementation team for a new claims processing software, then managing a claims department, was a manager in the Medical Affairs department, managed the HMO provider relations department, worked in Product Development and Special Projects, managed the Electronic Commerce, was a Business Line Manager in the IT department and finally was manager of BCBSOK's charitable foundation. I was the corporate project team leader for the implementation of all aspects of HIPAA. I've lived in Tulsa since 1976. My husband, Gary and I got married 30 years ago. W...Expand for more
e met through mutual friends in Tulsa. Gary is a self-employed Landscape Architect and is still working but primarily for long-standing clients. We have two children, Heidi who is 28 and Eric who is 26. Both are married and live in Jenks, just 15 minutes from our door. My daughter and her husband, Preston have a 2 year old daughter, Kyli who is very much the center of our lives right now. I pick her up Monday through Thursday for a few hours in the afternoon for some "Nanaw and Papa" time. We spend a lot of time with our kids and their families. Heidi and Eric both work for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Eric's wife, Meredith, is an attorney. Heidi's husband, Preston, is a mechanical engineer. I know there is a God because my husband and I have had a great life together and our children turned out to be exceptional young adults with a lot more common sense and self confidence than I had at their age. Gary and I travel whenever we can and have taken some great trips. We will be going to Red River, New Mexico early in July and then to Alaska later in the month. I am a 17 year breast cancer survivor. I know there is a God . . . . . I still keep in close contact with Judy Kratzer Gibson, Paula Fuhrman Cail and Cheryl Marshall Poole. My sister, Ann, lives in Oklahoma City as does her daughter and son-in-law and two grandchildren. My parents (both now deceased) moved to Ponca City after I graduated from college, so my occasions to travel to Oklahoma City were reduced as we made trips to Ponca City to see family.
