Mary's Story
In 1966 I moved to Seattle to go to school. In August of that year I met my future husband. We were married on November 23, 1968 in Marblemount, WA where he was working at the time on the North Cascade Highway. In the spring of 1969 we moved around the mountain to continue working on the highway. Because it was so far from the nearest town, we lived on the road while it was under construction. The fun part was chopping ice for the frig. The state would service the generator, so the power would be off a couple of days. In the fall of 1969 we moved to Yakima where he started work on I 82 between Ellensburg and Yakima. We made Yakima our base as we traveled around the state working various jobs. When we could not work, in the winter we would take that time to travel to visit friends in Oregon and California. From there we would spend a month in Tucson AZ. Then head back up to Washington to continue working. We have traveled to various other parts of the United States.
In 1981 we moved to the Tri Cities. I have two boys Paul and Eric. In 1986 we moved to Pasco where I continue to make my home. Both of the boys have been involved with band in the Pasco School Dist from the time they were in the 5th grade until they graduated from PHS. I was very involved with them in the band program. I was secretary for two years and band president for the two years. I fixed the meals for the students each year at band camp. I fixed two meals a day for 4 days. This meant feeding 100 students and 10 adults meals. For those 4 days.
We were lucky to be able do a lot of traveling with the band. We spent a week in LA, the band performed at Disneyland, also went to many marching band shows. We also were able to go to many state football games while the boys were at PHS. I over saw the concession stand for Calvacade of Bands in P...Expand for more
asco and Kennewick.
In 1994 I went to work for the Richland School District at Carmichael Middle School working in the 6th grade resource room. Last year I worked with the 8th graders, this year I will work a combo of 6th & 7th grade.
For the past 6 years I have helped judge the Senior Project for the Pasco School District. Which I have found to be very interesting.
Last November my husband passed away from lung cancer.
This past year has been an interesting year for me.
Boy what a winter I had. I had taken the bus to work because I knew we were in for a good snowstorm. It took 45 minutes to get from Knight St. in Richland to Road 100 in Pasco. Normally it takes 10 to 15 minutes. Hanford decided to let all nonessential employees off two hours early. Which really backed traffic up that night. I made it to road 100 in time to catch the next bus to my stop. Since it snowed most of the day they had not shoveled the sidewalks. I was trying to stay on the sidewalk, but stepped between the grass and sidewalk and with the next step I tripped and fell on my left shoulder. When I got up I knew I had done something but did not know what. When I got home I called my youngest son and he said he was on he way home from work, when he got home he took me to the hospital and there I found I had broken my left shoulder. My shoulder is still not 100% but it is slowly getting back to normal.
In 2021 I finally retired from the Richland School District after spending 27 years working with the students. I was lucky to work with a great group of teachers and learn new things. I spent 13 years in the 6th grade then moved into an eight class for several years. I monitored students in a Read 180 class. I have given every Washington State required test for the students starting with the CBS test, and ending with the SBACK test.
