Mary's Story
Life
After graduating from Texas A&M with a BA in Political Science I moved to Connecticut to work as a manager for The Home Depot. I returned to Texas and now live in Houston. I met my husband, John Thro, here and we have three wonderful boys, John Cameron, Thomas Edward, and Robert Linus. I am a stay at home mom.
The first 10 years of my marriage were spent caring for my children, volunteering at my church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, (Houston, TX) and at my children's school, at the parish. I honed my experience as an event planner and fund raiser, serving as the committee chair for the festival committee for three years, slashing expenses, garnering donations, and growing our volunteer base. My last major event-fund raiser was the 2008 Auction Gala for my children's school. We raised $60,000+. I am very proud of my accomplishments in the volunteer sector and hope to some day get a job with a non-profit doing similar work but get paid to do it! My volunteerism has shown my boys to have concern and compassion for others and has engendered in them ...Expand for more
a sense of service.
I am currently a cub scout leader for my son Thomas. I forsee, broadening my knowledge of that organization. Although, I never thought I'd be a 'Scouter', circumstances change.
My husband is an instrumentation engineer in the oil & gas industry. We are very fortunate in this time of economic uncertainty that he has his job due to his ability and the respect his collegues have for him.
We live in Northwest Houston, with three cats, one fixed tom who has wheedled his way into our lives after we saved him, and a second tom who just sits outside and waits to be fed.
My children, are very bright (they get that from their father) and enjoy playing soccer, TKD, and computer games. My son, Thomas, aspires to be an artist, my oldest, John, I forsee being an engineer or computer game designer, and my youngest...I've not quite figured him out yet.
Currently, I am seeking employment to start saving for the high cost of Catholic High School education in Houston. Any tips from Houston area alumni would be appreciated!
