Mary's Story
Soprano Elizabeth Wells, once known as Mary Waters, attained her masters degree in vocal performance from Northwestern University in Chicago, after attending the University of Arizona. She has performed as chorister or soloist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Arizona Opera, Rome Festival Opera, South Bay Opera, Pacific Palisades Symphony, and Intimate Opera. Her roles include Gilda, Nedda, Hanna, Musetta, Constanza, Anina, Susanna, Cherubino, Adele, Rosalinda, Kate Pinkerton (in a production directed by late Japanese actor Mako), Gretel, the Dew Fairy, Sister Constance, Donna Anna, Zerlina, Pamina, First Lady and The Queen of the Night.
In 1998, she created the role of Gwendolen in the world-premiere of John Biggs' Opera Ernest Worthing for Ventura Opera. In 2001, she created the role of Anna in Jonathan Schwabe' s opera The Hard Years for the Maud Powell Festival in Chicago. In Acq...Expand for more
uila, Italy, she did the first performance of Deus Familia Noster by Andre Hanzelewitcz. She also performed two seasons at the Maud Powell Festival in Chicago.
In her twelve years as a private voice instructor in both Chicago and Los Angeles, Ms. Wells has produced students who now work professionally in opera, pop, rock, world music and musical theater.
In Los Angeles, Ms. Wells served as Executive Director for the Intimate Opera Company. She moved to Corvallis, Oregon, in 2003, and founded Willamette Concert Opera, which has regular performances in Portland and Corvallis. WCO's predecessor was created in Los Angeles. Since then, she has overseen more than 25 concert performances including Rigoletto, Die Fledermaus, Don Giovanni, Hansel and Gretel, La Boheme, Tosca, Don Pasquale, Le Villi, Il Tabarro, II Corsaro, II Signor Bruschino, Betly, Adrianna Lecouvreur, and The Magic Flute .
