Mary's Story
School
After living and going to school most of my life in South Dakota, we moved to Kansas for my dad's job in about 1964. I went to the great Lawrence High School for a couple of years until my dad had a serious heart attack and had to take early (at age 45!) retirement.
We then moved to Texas middle of my junior year to be near my mom's family. I graduated from high school in Woodville...what a change! Moving from a school where there were probably 500 or more in my CLASS to one where there probably weren't that many kids in the whole school (and I mean K-12). That may be a slight exaggeration, but there were only about 50 in our graduating class of 1967. The kids there were kind to this shy yankee girl who remained scared that her dad was about to die (which he eventually did at age 79!).
College
Having moved to East Texas mid-way of high school junior year, I graduated from Kirby High School in Woodville and my parents gave me the choice of going 50 miles south to Lamar Univ. in Beaumont or 50 miles north to Stephen F. Austin St. Univ. in Nacogdoches. I chose SFA because 1. I didn't know I HAD more than 2 choices, and 2. I thought Beaumont... with its oil & gas refineries and other industries...was ugly & stank. Whereas, SFA was a pretty campus in the piney woods. I went there alone, knowing no one, made lots of friends, worked hard the first year. Which was lucky because I totally goofed off the next 2 years, but managed to never drop below a 2.0 overall and eventually got busy again and graduated with a...Expand for more
double major in Spanish/English and a minor in French. Met my future husband shortly before graduation, which made me decide to enroll in graduate school and get a job so I could hang around with ("support") him for a few more years while he finished his master's degree. I never did finish mine.
Workplace
Fresh out of college, and taking graduate classes, I put my brand new English/Spanish degree working for the Editor of Forestry Publications and Director of International Studies at SFASU in Nacogdoches, Texas. Sounds great but in actuality, I was a very low-paid secretary to a bunch of faculty members and receptionist for the entire department. Moved after a few years in that extremely dysfunctional environment to a different department on campus. While there, I became pregnant with our first child and never returned to the job after his birth in 1978.
In fact, I never worked full-time for money again until 1994 when my third and youngest child was almost 10 years old, and I started temping at a small, new engineering company. After 10 years, I still work there, now as office director and technical writer.
In the years between 1978 and 1994 I was heavily involved in all things child-related, leading La Leche League meetings (if you don't know what that is, don't worry about it), serving on PTA boards, and giving many hours of volunteer work for school and church. I gave up SOME of that when I went to work, but it still felt like I worked 3 full time jobs. (now that the kids are all grown, I only work TWO!)
