Maryan's Story
Life since Narbonne High School, well it has been a ride I must say. I have had the opportunity to travel and boy am I good at packing! Various experiences have allowed me the chance to do many diverse things and for that, I am most grateful. I was married for a short while and had two great children who I am crazy proud of and enjoy poking at just enough to keep them on their toes!
I remember in the speech I gave at graduation I started with a quote, âMy candle burns at both ends, it will not last the night, but ah my foes, and oh my friends, it gives a lovely light.â Edna St. Vincent Millay, a gifted poet and one of my favorites.
When I was eighteen that quote caught my attention, and she was right, it does give a lovely light. She also said, âSoar, eat ether, see what has never been seen; depart, be lost, but climb.â You have to love that kind of attitude, Iâm blessed to have done some of that as well.
Looking back on myself at 18 I am shocked that my naivety didnât do me in, but there is little I would change. When I turned 50 I took a good hard look at my life and decided I wasnât going to get old full of regrets so I went back faced my nemesis...Expand for more
and never looked back. Iâm writing now and looking at self-publishing, at least once I find an editor, I do have a tendency to ramble at times.
I certainly do not feel 66, but I donât feel 18 either, somewhere along the way I feel like Iâve gotten a bit smarter, kept a bit of my naivety so I am still surprised by life and Iâve figured out what is important. I say let the adventure continue.
It hasnât all been fun heaven knows I think Iâve spent more time smacked down on my knees than I have spent standing, but even through the worst of it Iâve learned and it turns out I love learning! I pushed through to get my MBA and taught at the university level for a while. There is something incredibly gratifying in having a student hunt you down and say, âremember what you told me in classâ¦, it workedâ. Go figure, teaching, heaven knows I fought against education enough in high school.
I think the best news of all is that as I have gotten older my perspective has gotten wider. I have learned the art of seeing things through different eyes. Life is full of wonder, magic and mystery, I look forward to continuing to see what further adventures await.
