Maryellen's Story

Life Hi Everybody! The Q & A seems to be a little rigid and unforgiving in it's answer choices so I thought I'd add a few highlights. After school I attended UMO for several semesters trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. A year and a half later I figured out that Orono was not the place for me. (The University assisted me in this decision by releasing me to seek opportunities elsewhere). I moved to Augusta (Maine) and worked for the state for a number of years as a medical research librarian with the Department of Human Services. In my free time I sang and played flute with the Augusta Symphony and was about as physically active as a mushroom. In late 1991 the Governor started cleaning out positions that he thought were un-needed and he eliminate my position and released me to seek out opportunities elsewhere.....(are you beginning to see a pattern?) At that point I thought I'd go back to school, so I applied and was accepted at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. I did the interview, site visit, got my class list, and visited the dorm where the "older" students resided hoping to be able to get a room, because at the ripe old age of 26 I was considered an "older learner". But I wouldn't start until September 1992, so I need to find something do until then. I answered an ad in the Portland paper that read, "Come work in a room with a view" and was hired as a retail clerk at Grand Canyon National Park. I moved most of my belongings into my folks attic, packed two suitcases and went to Arizona. And I've never looked back..... In the 15 years that I've b...Expand for more
een in Arizona I've had a good time becoming the person I've always wanted to be, but I've still not figured out what I want to do when I grow up. I'm married, and have no children. I met the man of my dreams here at Grand Canyon and married him in a beautiful service at sunset on the canyon edge 10 years ago. Though we both love to play golf, he plays like it's an addiction, and I play because I prefer to be outside in some of the most beautiful places in the world. I'm an avid walker and hiker (around here a walker is on flat ground, a hiker goes up and down) and regularly hike into the canyon. I still work for Xanterra Parks & Resorts but today I manage a gift store & gallery that specalizes in Native American Arts & crafts. My office window is less that 20 yards from the edge, and I do have a room with a view. I think I've found my opportunities elsewhere..... I look forward to hearing from you, and if there is a 25th reunion , possibly seeing you again. Update: since writing this several years ago some things have changed. In the middle of 2008 I was offered and accepted a position with the Grand Canyon Railway, also operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts. My husband and I now reside in Williams, AZ located an hour south of Grand Canyon National Park. We've bought a house located on our favorite golf course and are thoroughly enjoying life to the fullest. I miss my weekend jaunts into the Grand Canyon and I miss the people that I worked with for 18 yearsbut we are enjoying this new chapter in our lives. I look forward to making a reunion sometime in the future. I just need to know when and where.
