Maryjo's Story
Life
I own a hair salon here in Richmond Virginia . It is my dream job! I'm also attempting to appear to be an athlete, lol. I joined a girls team last year and had a blast w/triathlons and road races. This year I am attempting a half Ironman.I also was fortunate enough to be on a dance team and perform some latin dancing, so much fun! I've made many dear friends since moving here in 1995 but look forward to catching up w/everyone at our next reunion this August,(20 years, can you believe it?!!). MJO
Workplace
My first, true beginnings in the field of Hairdressing were at the Vocational center in Fishersville, then on to the Staunton School of cosmetology. I advanced in hairdressing by attending as many hairshows as possible, almost every weekend! When I'd been in the field 7 years, I moved to Richmond desiring a bigger city, more activities, excitement and better oppurtunity to get ahead in my profession. Once here in Richmond, I became aware of the many National level Acdemies who offer advanced education for licensed stylists. I had no idea they made such a difference! I studied in Chicago at Pivot Point, Miami at Vidal Sassoon , NYC-Toni&Guy,Graham Webb in Wash. D.C., and Redken Academy in NYC. Ultimately I wished to open my own salon, which I acc...Expand for more
omplished in Sept. of 1999. Luckily all went well and 3 years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase a historic home(1905) in the "Fan" area of Richmond. Now I have my dream, to live above my own Salon. Ofcourse, at this point, the Bank still owns the vast majority of it,lol! Last year I went to NYC and was privileged to study w/a salon that specializes in natural curly hair (Devachan). They have a unigue method of cutting, coloring and maintaining this specific type of hair. My goal was also to take an advanced certification in the speciality of coloring. It is coordinated by the American Board of Certified Colorists (ABCH). I took the exam up in New York last April and passed. Boy, did I learn a lot just in the studying for the exam process!! Very difficult. (also passed up the chance to go to a really good Hootie and the Blowfish concert to study for that). In March I attended a trade show, the International Beauty Show at the Javitz Center in NYC. It showcased the latest trends in techniques, tools , products and business software and instruction to improve the running of your Salon on a daily basis. The career is more like a calling and while I try not to take myself too seriously(I'm a big goofball), I do take my livelhood seriously and passionately.
