Marylou's Story
After the high school years ... much of which I forget, so forgive me if I don't remember your name when you visit my page. I'll check it in a yearbook and that will jog my grey matter enough to say ... ah yes, I remember you. I've had a lot of surgeries over the years and with each new dose of anesthesia more data has been wiped clean but in the long run it's of little consequence 'cause I can always create new memories.
I met my husband in 1970 while I was a Primary Specialist teaching kindergarten. We got married and moved to London Ont. where I couldn't use my teaching degree so I ended up working in a bank until we had our wonderful son William ... a redhead .. I married a redhead, so we're one small sunburnt family.
We moved a lot; about every three years following my husband's career across Canada, but kept returning to the Mississauga area, mostly Lorne Park and Mineola; have now landed in south east Oakville where we hope to remain until it's time for the nursing home.
I took up singing back in '98 and produced and directed two fundraisers for Alzheimers in Mississauga. There's a family history of early onset so it's an important cause for me. Worked a lot with my sister Sue singing in shows until she retired and moved to Bala. I started to drive north in the summers to join her doing small charity work for Muskoka churches and legions. In 2012 Sue brought together a talented group of performers and musicians and asked me to join, so while the rest of the members all live in the general area, I commute every spring and summer for rehearsals and shows. We did a Pt Carling show and one in Bracebridge with close to $...Expand for more
22,000 raised so far for local charities; we donate all our time and only need to cover costs for tech and theatre. In 2015 we're booked for a rock n'roll show in Huntsville, in fact I'm working on the songs right now ... we have a guitarist, drummer, keyboard player, costumes ... eight members in all. Fun to rehearse and even more fun to perform. I think my favourite singing memory is from the early 2000's when I sang two solos on the Roy Thomson stage in TO; a great experience.
My husband Lloyd retired in '98; he keeps busy doing business coaching if there's time to accommodate a client between rounds of golf. We have one son who works with grieving children in the Oakville/Mississauga area.
and that's my story ... so far. I've joined Classmates for 3 months so by mid April I'll be gone from these pages. If you want to contact me after that I can be found at ... sorry not allowed to enter an email address but if you spell my name as " merrilu" and add a ".oliver " to a G mail contact you may find me.
So, April 15 2015 is fast approaching; my classmates membership is not being renewed so I'll no longer be able to reply or view any messages that you might send after the 15th. Take care all and may your future be fun and fulfilling.
If you're in the Hunstville area this spring, support their hospital fundraiser by attending our show on May 23rd at the Algonquin Theatre. We have another fundraiser in Gravenhurst on Nov. 21st at the Opera House; it's to support the Bracebridge hospital auxiliary.
