Matt's Story

Life I am currently divorced with no children. I have recently purchased a 3 bedroom house here in Ely, Nevada. I own 3 vehicles: a white 2009 Acura TSX, a maroon 1990 Dodge Ramcharger 4X4 and a primered 1973 Chevrolet Impala. I don't have any pets. College In January of 2003 I attended Western Nevada Community College in Carson City, Nevada. I applied and was accepted to the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy at the college. In August of 2003 I graduated from the college / academy. Upon graduation I received a Nevada Category 1 P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer's Standardized Training) certificate. In short, I paid my own way through the academy in order to make myself a more desirable candidate for employment as a law enforcement officer. By already having my P.O.S.T. certification, the department that chose to hire me did not have to pay to send me to any type of training or academy. All I had to do to maintain law enforcement employment was to pass the individual department's Field Training Officer program. Workplace I am currently employed by the White Pine County Sheriff's Office, located in Ely, Nevada, as a deputy sheriff in the pat...Expand for more
rol division. I got hired in June of 2004. In White Pine County the only law enforcement is supplied by the Sheriff's Office, so I have all the responsibilities of your standard police officer. White Pine County is approximately 9,000 square miles, so we have a lot of ground to cover. The City of Ely is the county seat and is where the majority of the population is (approximately 4,000 people). We also cover the towns of Ruth, McGill, Lund, Baker, Cherry Creek and a whole lot of wilderness in between. Prior to obtaining this job I worked for 6 years as a salaried manager for Kmart Corporation. I worked in 5 different stores throughout California, Nevada and Utah in many different managerial aspects. Once Kmart suffered it's financial difficulties, I chose to go back to school and acquire a skill with a little more job security involved. Thus, law enforcement peaked my interest and seems to be a job that is always in high demand. I'm extremely happy with my career choice. I feel that I have the best job in the world and I can't imagine ever doing anything else. I plan on staying in the law enforcement field for the next 20-25 years.
