Matt's Story

Hello my little lovey dovies... First, I apologize if I ever did you wrong back in those fantastically corrosive unsupervised teenage years - I didn't mean to treat you bad = now don't let that make yer brown eyes blue. Good ole Reyburbia - tomato fetish and ridiculous self indulgent 70's haze ¿ Did that cop really come in and pass a lit joint around our classroom during 9th grade health class? ¿Pay attention kids, I'm going to light this up and pass it around so you'll know what it smells like.¿ What kind of messed up educational experience was that supposed to be? The 70's version of DARE?, as in, I DARE you to take a big ole toke off this zep when it floats by. Apparently the adults in charge couldn't see the cloud of smoke hanging over the parking lot. Great way to spend one's formative years, eh? - I think half the faculty at RHS was stoned, I know half the student body was. I don't remember some of it - and some of it I do. I guess it's a wash. I left the Burg in 78 - got a job at OSU hospital - AND I did some other stuff too, it's not really any more important now than it was then... More significantly, I went backpacking every weekend and my stereo was sufficiently loud ¿ just about all one really needed to be a happy hippie in those days. Then one night in 1979, at a hole in the wall joint on High St. called Major Chords, I witnessed Cleveland's masters of the avante groove, "Pere Ubu", fragmenting spacetime with their oddly disorienting creative genious; this experience instantly changed how I think about music. Not long after that, but long before any frat boys thought it might be cool to go out ¿punking¿, I saw Patti Smith Group. Before long I cut my hair with a razor blade and began a whole new musical expedition. ¿Step up to my patio, Daddy-o.¿ It was too much fun. I discovered a thing or two I really can't explain - like - it's possible to achieve goals that are ...Expand for more
actually quite elusive; you just can't run at 'em head on - and - sometimes its just easier to drop back ten years and punt. I've been around the world - a couple times, actually - I've seen and done a pretty good chunk of the stuff I've dreamed of seeing and doing - I have very few regrets, and I don't regret the ones I do have. I have been blessed to have really good friends, and a great family. In 1984 I married my Linda - we're still married in spite of my preoccupation with nuance, and I'm still crazy in love with her. We have 3 sons who are 17, 21, and 26 (and one daughter in law). I did 12 1/2 years active duty in the Navy - which shouldn't really be that hard for you folks to imagine. I finished up my 20 in the Reserves, and retired from the Navy in 2005. While in the Navy, I also had a gig for a few years producing and writing soundtracks, and doing Foley Art for a computer animation firm in Sandy Eggo. I have lived in the NE KS area since 97, and worked in KC as an electronics (RF) field technician on a wireless advanced metering network for ten years. I got laid off in 07 and just took myself off line for a year - to get some thinking done. ¿ I did some writing, and recorded a CD down in Austin with my old Reynoldsburg pal, Kurt. You can go to our semi-retired web page blueskywaymusic (dot calm), and check it out - even buy a copy if you like. Not so long ago, I decided to give up running from divine inspiration and started a new career in full time ministry. Now I'm reassessing whether or not church is too conservative for me - or perhaps I'm too liberal for church - whichever it is, maybe there's a better way for me to respond to the grand option. OK - stop laughing y'all. Actually, I haven't felt this young since... well, since we were young - and I'm nowhere near as stupid as I was back then. Yep, life can really be quite surprising. Now let's Mamba! Peace, Matt
