Matthew's Story
Life
I am currently an Assistant Principal at Southwest Junior High School in Lawrence, Kansas. I graduated from Regents College (N.Y.) with an A.S. (1984), from Christopher Newport College with a B.A. (History w/ Secondary Ed. minor, 1990), and with a M.Ed. from Washburn University of Topeka (1996). I served in the U.S. Army (1981-1988) got married in 1983. I have a son, Ricardo, who was born in 1986. I divorced and remarried in 1991. I retired as a member of the Army National Guard. I served in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
School
I attended Fillmore Elementary School and then Adams Elementary School in Davenport, IA. I moved to Mt. Vernon, IN in 1969 and attended West Elementary and both junior and senior high (Mt. Vernon) there. I went to ISUE, then Murray State before joining the Army. I attended St. Leo, the University of the State of New York, Florida State (Panama Canal branch), and Texas Tech while in the Army. I finally got a B.A. from Christopher Newport in VA. I attended Longwood College, Virginia State, Kansas State, Kansas, and Washburn at the graduate level, earning my M.Ed. from W.U. I began coursework on my Ph.D. at UMKC before being deployed to Afghanistan.
Workplace
The military kicked off any real career. I started as a military policeman and investigator. I completed my degree and started teaching and ...Expand for more
coaching at the high school level. I found I enjoyed the middle levels more, so I returned to the midwest and taught junior high. After getting my administrator's certification I became an athletic director, followed by my current career as a building administrator/principal.
Military
I joined the Army while in NC and went to Basic and AIT for Military Police (1981) in Ft. McClelland, AL (near Anniston). My first duty assignment was Ft. Monroe, VA (1982)and I became a Military Police Investigator after additional training at the Peninsula Police Academy and Ft. McClelland, AL. I went to Presidio of Monterey, CA for Spanish training at the Defense Language Institute (1984) and was subsequently sent to Panama to work with Military Customs in Panama, Honduras, and Ecuador. I served as the interim Atlantic Customs Chief for USSouthCom. After my active duty time, I spent 1 year in the Virginia Army National Guard with an MP unit in Chesapeaker, VA. I had a 4 year break in service before joining the Kansas Army National Guard in 1993. With the 35th MPs, I travelled to Germany for one overseas tour (Kaiserslautern). My last 4 years prior to retirement from the military were spent with the 105th MPAD. I travelled overseas to Japan (Chitose/Sapporo) and Puerto Rico before being deployed for 18 months for duty in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
