Matthew Nelson:

CLASS OF 1981
Erie, PA

Matthew's Story

Just a little facts about me.I talk about my soccer playing alot because most of my friends and teammates would remember me most from soccer. I owe the McDowell Soccer team and coaches alot of credit for teaching the game to me because before my juniour year I was just a skier/ skateboarder who played a few years of baseball and little gridders football. I was way too small to play McDowell Football like my brother Mike Nelson who played in the 1970s. The below are some things that happened to me while playing soccer at McDowell and Gannon University. This is for anyone out there that was on my team and any of my old friends I have not talked to in awhile or anyone interested in my past. If I sound a bit to much I do not mean to. Im just telling what happened during my soccer playing days. Im the first one to critisize myself. Its the only way you can improve your game. You find what your faults are and improve on them, practice really hard. This is what I did after every game and currently do this and try to practice this in other areas of my life. And I do need help in certain areas.LOL. I graduated from McDowell in 1981 and from Gannon University in 1984. I played soccer for McDowell both my junior and senior years. My senior year we went 9-2 and were Metro champions. I played soccer at Gannon University and was a four year lettermen as a forward and played in the 1984 NCAA Div. II National Soccer Tournament. We made it to the quarterfinal round and were ranked 7th in the Nation at the time. After 24 years, I am ranked in the top five americans in scoring in 38 seasons and ranked 16th overall. Check out Gannon Universitys Soccer Website to see were I stand before Im off their lists as they have tons of great players who are crushing my numbers. Suffered a dislocated shoulder from a violent collision with a goalkeeper in 1982 and again in 1984. Played approx. 2.5 seasons as a result.Surgery in 1989 to fix shoulder. This collision was the worst Ive ever been hit, like the worst NFL Hit a person could receive. Running full speed taking a left footed shot from 20 yards out and being run over by a goalkeeper and defender and both players landing on top of me. Its like having 400#s of meat falling on you and I weighed 145#s then. The force of the collision threw me backwards and trying to cushion the landing I stuck me left arm out which caught the ground dislocating my left shoulder. It was very violent all wind was knocked from my lungs and could not breathe. It felt like an eternity. It was like getting hit by a car.I was on field for about an hour and a half. After a 6o mile ambulance ride to Eries St Vincent Hospital my shoulder was put back in place with alot of pain. The good thing once my shoulder was in place the pain went away. I felt Ok to play in the next game against Youngstown State at Ainsworth Field in Erie. Suited with a flak jacket to limit my shoulder motion I scored on my first shift on. I have a photo from that goal taken by my brother Mark a fellow McDowell Alumni and will post it on my site. Its a cool photo. I was happy to just be alive after that violent collision but grateful to come back and help Gannon University win against Youngstown State. Definitely that game was one my most memorable performances personally. I plan to put more old photos from the McDowell Team of 1980 and other photos once I fiqure out how to do it. So stop by later. Another collision with a Penn-State Behrend goalkeeper my Junior year was also a real bummer. My fellow McDowell Alumni and teammate from my McDowell playing days John Andrews a goalkeeper playing for Behrend ran into me during a game in the Fall of 1983. It was a total accident and no one was at fault, although John suffered a broken eye socket and doctors highly recommended for him to hang up his cleats permantly. My head ball went just outside the right post. John got his hand on the ball and shut me down. It was a great save on his part. I always felt bad about this accident.I am Sorry John Andrews my fellow McDowell Alumni and teammate!!!!! One humorous story happened in 1984 my Senior year playing for Gannon University. In one of my last games against Mercyhurst we were beating upon them pretty bad like 7-2 or something. It was raining and very muddy. Well fellow McDowell Alumni and goodfriend Gary Peterson was playing in goal. Gary played on McDowells Soccer team in 1980 and was pretty much the only person in my neighborhood that I practiced soccer with. I give alot of credit to Gary for teaching me how to play. Well during this game I really wanted to put one by him. I was playing with a sprained ankle that day with my right foot all taped. I got a nice ball from a teammate and in the mud I scored with a shot to the right of him. Laughing at him for scoring he picked up some mud and starting throwing it at me. It was really funny getting pelted by your good friend Gary Peterson a fellow McDowell teammate. In 2003, my brother Mark won a distinquished Alumni award at Gannon University and I told the story to Dr. Antoine Garibaldi-President at Gannon University about the mud throwing game. I thought it was funny at the time. Dr. Garibaldi gave me the impression it was an act of war on the part of Mercyhurst and it was disrepectful. So Gary, I hope you read this story you mud throwing swiss cheese goalkeeper.LOL. Had to change my desription of you because I think classmates.com censored me.LOL. I still scored on ya.LOL It was quite funny that Dr. Garibaldi did not think highly of Gary's action that day. I told him Gary Peterson was the main person who taught me how to kick a soccer ball and it was just to be funny. I credit my playing days at McDowell High in 1980 my most memorable and players from that team my senior year taught me how to play. Many miles we ran that year, Wind Sprints, etc.. Coaches Bo Root and George Duskas. Bob Osiecki our great Captain. Keith Giddings, Gary Peterson and Jeff Curry all helped in teaching me the game, as well as my Father Lee. In December 2006, I had learned as a youngster 9 years of age I was at a historic college football game featured in the movie "We are Marshall". Marshalls victory over Xavier in the last seconds of the game. Great movie. Very Inspirational. I participated in a punt, pass and kick competition in 1972 with players most likely from that team on a Saturday afternoon in Hun...Expand for more
tington,Wva.. My brother Mike who is a fellow McDowell Alumni and former McDowell Trojan football player informed of this. I was absolutely blown away when I heard this. Pretty cool. Actually my little gridder football team was to play an exhibition game on their field but I missed it to fly to Erie to see my new home. On the back cover of the DVD for the movie it has a set of goal posts. Its were at age 9 my soccer career began. Kicking field goals through those posts. I was not very good at it from what I remeber.LOL. After playing soccer in college I played on a few Erie Mens League Soccer teams winning season titles three times in 1986, 1987 and 1989. My soccer playing days slowed a bit after getting married in 1989 and the birth of my daughter in 1992. Soccer really slowed down after a divorce in 1996. After this I played part time for years. I did play in a few Gannon University Alumni Games and two McDowell Alumni Games in 2007 and 2008, as well as, an Alumni Game at Edinboro State in 2008. Since playing only part time, I had great difficulty scoring like I did as a player for McDowell and Gannon. I was better at passing the ball instead. McDowell High has been having Alumni Games at Gus Anderson Field. In 2007 we played in 3" on snow under the lights. A close game. My team lost 3-2. In 2008, my team won 7-2. I scored the 3rd goal in the victory. It had been since October 1980 since I had scored a goal on a McDowell field. It most likely was one of the most memorable goals in my soccer playing days. I sprinted 70 yards to catch up to our attacking players. I was lucky my heart kept beating after the long sprint. After both of these games, I went to bed with with a giant smile as I could not believe what had happened. McDowell Soccer Fields have always been good to me. I have always felt McDowell players always were great passers, unselfish. Unlike players I played with at Gannon University who were mainly from foreign lands and only passed to their fellow foreigners. Lots of selfish players in college. My nephews are avid soccer players who play for the Erie Admirals at Family First and will eventually play for the Trojans. They like to call me Uncle Rico, the Uncle that likes to boast about past sports accomplishments in the movie Napolean Dynamite.LOL.Actually I never really talked much about my soccer playing back then as I was so quiet. They both got coal for Xmas in 2008. When Im in my 50's I plan to take em both out in future Alumni Games. The year before my team mates laughed when they announced the year I graduated 1981. 45 Years Old. Plan on playing in 2009 and hope to do it again. I plan on training harder this time. So I hope someone from my team in 1980 is reading this story. Its one for the Class of 1981!!!!! and my team mates. When Im not playing soccer, I mainly work all the time and help with my father who is ill. My father is who mainly taught me how to play soccer and baseball. I did alot of skiing at Peek Peak, Holiday Valley a few expeditions to Killington, Vermont and Mt. Hood, Oregon.Took a trip with my good friend Keith Giddings to Stowe,Vt. in 1993. A fellow McDowell Alumni. Back in my teens I lived on a Skateboard and liked to skate on ramps and swimming pools at Skateparks. Breaking my collarbone back in 1978. My daughter has been in a number of McDowell productions at McDowell's Intermediate Little Theater and has danced in Ballet for over 10 years. Anyways, the above is a little about me that came to my mind this evening of January 5th, 2009. If I can think of more to write. Stop back later. Thanx Listen to this one. Like Forrest Gump says "Lifes like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get" On January 6th, 2009, I got in a wicked car accident because of an Ice Storm. Wrecked my truck pretty good and the other car was worse. Thank god no one was injured.Close call. Just 20 feet away on Christmas Eve near were the accident happened in a Red Mountain Climbing jacket I dug a women out of a snow bank when know one else would help, looking more like Santa Claus doing a good deed. I guess doing good things does not help ward off bad things happening to you.LOL. The lady asked me whats your name? My thoughts were at the time. Im fricking a tired Santa Claus lady lonely as ever just having worked an 8 hour work shift and going to spend Christmas Eve by myself again as car sped by me on RT. 20. Not wanted to stop and help. My name is Matthew. And my thoughts were to myself. Im Uncle Rico and McDowell Alumni Soccer Games do not count according to a Brother in Law. That evening I spent it at my brother Michaels a former McDowell Football Player a McDowell Alumnus house. After a fun quiet evening when my nephews and brother in law were leaving. They made sure to say goodbye to Uncle Rico. Goodbye Uncle Rico they said. I loved it! I actually love the new nickname. Update!!!! Jan 26th,2009- I finally see Uncle Rico in the Movie "Napolean Dynamite" very funny. Im not as bad as him I just miss the old soccer player in me from that 1980 McDowell team. My senior season was something I have never forgotten. And I will never forget playing on Gus Anderson Field on November 29th,2008. If I sound like I was boasting above like the Uncle Rico my nephews call me Yeah just a little bit but I must admit my high school coachs and the great players from the 1980 Metro Champion McDowell Soccer Team were all great players and played from the heart and deserve all the credit. Im just happy my year went good that year when alot of my years did not go as well. For Christmas 2008, my Co-Workers bought me a size #3 Soccer ball. Nice a youth soccer ball. I shall start a new and and start to train for the 2009 McDowell Soccer Alumni Game in November of 2009. I hope some of my past friends and past teammates can see this old man play if Im able too.LOL. I may need a walker. Thanx for visiting my profile. If I can think of anything else to say I will revise. Check back later. Matt P.S. January 22, 2009. Regarding my car accident. We were both lucky in the violent hit. Im at fault because I slid through a red light on ice near Lowes on Rt. 20. $4600.00 other driver. Me Approx. $1000.00. I may need some old friends/alumni take me out to dinner as this will screw me up moneywise this month.LOL. Need a new girlfriend also that can teach me how to date again.
