Maura's Story

Hello fellow '87ers! I find it hard to believe it's been 22 years since we bid farewell to Bassett H.S. Just a little bit about myself: I went to CSUF right after high school. Started working at the Los Angeles Times for what I promised would be 6 months in 1989 and 17 years later I "retired" from The Times. It was an amazing run and I learned much and met the most incredibly talented people. It was an absolute think tank! I even had a handful of bylines! But it was time to move on and start a new chapter in my life. Being a voracious reader, it was only natural that I'd move on to work at a library and I'm in heaven.. books, books, books! I absolutely love my job and the city I work for. I'm a collector of bakelite 1930-40's vintage radios and antique clocks, whether they tick or not. I love older homes, especially the early century Arts and Crafts homes. I still enjoy writing, mostly non-fiction and poetry. Photography is my newest love, though something I dabbled in for the last 20 or so years. On occasion, I still hit the mike at karaoke nights or with live mariachi, though I gave up aspirations to be a recording artist back in my 20s :> Where the heck was American Idol when I needed them!? Though I'm not shy to admit that in 1992 I was this close to being on Star Search after several auditions. Unfortunately, I didn't make the cut, but it was a great experience. ospect, it's probably just as well...I know now I don't have a thick skin for the ebb and flow of fame:) In 2005, my partner, Katherine, and I bought a beautiful 1915 Craftsman bungalow in a historic enclave of Arts & Crafts, Spanish and Victorian homes. We absolutely love it and look forward to celebrating her 100th birthday in 6 years! We have been restoring the house for 4 years. It's a long process, but we're very proud of the work we've done on it. We've even named her! We have 5..count them, 1,2,3,4, five(!!) Shih-tzu's: Lucas, Winston, Zoe, Oliver & Coco and 2 cats, Bella and Milan-- they're all the "kids" we need, thank you very much!!! They keep us incredibly busy, but they are an absolute joy and we are shamelessly gaga over them. They actually own us, not the other way around. I still see many former classmates and we spend as much time together as possible. It's been fun watching the children of these friends grow up through the years as we all marvel at the fact that we're 40 (say it ain't so!!!!!). For some reason, it simply never occurred to me that I'd be 40 one day, it just seemed so far off in the future as to not exist! Ha! But I feel it will be the best time ever. I feel incredibly blessed and thankful for the life I wake up to each day, for the family of friends I love and for the family I have. I hope you all are faring well ! Send me a note and say hello!
