Maureen's Story
UPDATE: Life Goes On.
I recently had two strokes. One in May and a second in December - that one leading to brain surgery from which I am still trying to recover. It was a difficult operation that took over 7 hours but I came out of it okay and the 12 weeks of rehab has helped tremendously. But it's a long and tedious process. I'm am still living in my childhood home in Baldwin, trying to put the pieces back together after Sandy dumped 4 feet of water inside the house and relocating me to the confines of a hotel room in Bayside for 10 months. A shout out to those friends of my sister, Kathleen, class of 1970, who came to the house, even when they themselves and their own families were in need of help and gave me a hand with what was a monumental task for someone like myself living on my own. Bless you all! I know that if God brings it to you, God will get you through it, but I sometimes can't help thinking that enough is enough already *giggles*! Still optimistic about the future, just a bit frustrated with the present..
Life
I graduated from MR after finishing my Junior year and I immediately moved out on my own, bought myself a Harley Davidson Sportster and had a great time. Looking back on things, I think I would have chosen not to have taken on so much responsibility at the age of 17. Although I had to sell my bike a few years ago, I'm hopi...Expand for more
ng to get another someday. I'm still on Long Island, never moved too far from home, but I would love to relocate and get away from the traffic and the taxes. I use to have a cottage in Bellport, LI, but after my mom passed away in 2003 I just couldn't sell my "childhood home" in Baldwin, so I decided to move in. I use to own an environmental remediation company which I opened in 1987. Although there are some advantages to owning your own business I believe in the saying "the only thing more over rated that owning your own business is natural childbirth." I've recently merged with another environmental company and I'm enjoying sharing the responsibility of running it, especially in these hard economic times. Before that I was licensed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell real estate deals and oil and gas drilling syndications. Tax reform in 1986 squashed that venture and that, along with my divorce, put me back into a more realistic tax bracket. As for my 13 years of marriage that went poof when he took up with a younger girl, all I can say is that it was better to have loved and lost then to have stayed married to the idiot. If I had to express where I am in my life right now I would have to say that I am "content with the regrets in my past", not totally satisfied with my life at the present but very hopeful and optimistic about my future.
