Maureen's Story

Life Entered UC Berkeley Fall 1963. Survived Sproul Hall sitins. Vista Volunteer 1965-66, in Alabama and West Virginia. Married Brad Powers (AB Psychology, Harvard 59) 1966. Graduated UC Berkeley with AB in Sociology 1968. Civilian personnel spec. US Navy, Treasure Island 1968-70. Neuroscience Technician, Univ. Michigan 1970-71. Entered graduate school Univ. Michigan 1971. Son Dana Prescott Kennedy Powers born Ann Arbor MI 1976. Graduated Univ. Michigan with PhD in Psychobiology 1977. Postdoctoral fellowships UM and U Washington 1978-79. Professor of Psychology, Vanderbilt University 1980-99. Published over 70 papers; awarded grants from NIH, NSF. Founded and directed Vanderbilt Vision Research Center. Daughter Hilary Lynn Kennedy Powers born Nashville TN 1985. Sabbatical leave at Cambridge University, UK (85-86). Various academic honors, awards, administrative positions. ude in Computer Engineering, Math, and Music from Vanderbilt 1998. I returned to live forevermore in California summer 1999; Married Gary Miner, former piano partner (Encinal 63) in December 1999. I was C.E.O. of Gemstone Educational Management 2000 - 2007. Gary retired from Richmond Fire Dept June 2001; started doing contracting full time as Miner Repairs. I was Research Engineer, UC Berkeley School Optometry 2001- 2002. Founder and Senior Scientist, Gemstone Foundation 2002-pres. Founded Gemstone Foundation (nonprofit scientific/service) 2003-pres. Awarded NIH grant plus others. Hilary graduated in Religious Studies from Indiana University, and Dana received JD from Stanford in 2007. Dana and Hilary both live in the Bay Area now, with their respective soul-mates. Gary's kids (3 daughters) have given us 5 grandkids since 2002 -- any new ones will have to come from my side! Life is great!! I'd love to re-connect with any of my former classmates -- Call me!

The famous Crockett Lions pasta feed fundraiser is this Saturday! Come eat great pasta, share good times, and support your community. All you can eat for only $15 (kids $10)!
Got my yellow belt last Saturday! Grandkids are up next, for theirs.
Presented our work from schools in LA and Osaka at College of Optometrists in Vision Development annual convention in Las Vegas. We found a very weak correlation between eye chart acuity and reading-related vision problems.
Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful birthday wishes! I'm at Hoover dam today, wearing a shirt my brother Gordon sent for my b'day. Going to see jersey boys on the Las Vegas strip tonight!
