Maureen's Story

The pics are our children, grandchildren and us (Mike & me) thru some of the years. Weddings, graduations, and other milestones. My love passed away in October of 2009. We had 40 yrs together. It was quite a life. We had many journeys together. The last two years were the hardest. Mike had heart problems, diabeties and kidney failure. Our retirement years was not what we planned. We had hoped to travel to all the places he had been, so I could see these countries through his eyes. I got to see them another way, sort of. I started making a scrapbook album of his Air Force career and asked questions about special memories of his trips. Mike died before I completed it. I just recently finished it because it became more difficult after his passing. I wanted it to do him justice. He was a good man, smart, funny. He kept our life interesting. He loved to irritate me, and then when I was mad, he would laugh, then hug me. The old man just liked a good fight! When our children were young, and we put them to bed, Mike would sing to me, he had a beautiful voice. We would dance in the living room. One day when he got home from work he played in the yard for awhile having a water gun fight with our children. I was cooking dinner. He came in and squirted me. aucet attachment and sprayed back. He surrendered and left. Later I heard him say I love you, honey, and when I looked up he had the GARDEN HOSE. He soaked me good but I fought back with my kitchen faucet. We were wet, our kitchen was flooded and the children were crying. They thought we were fighting. After we soothed them we spent over an hour sweeping out the water, then using everything we could to dry up the mess. That night we laughed. Mike said if the children had done that we would have killed them. Being a military family he loved to bring people home for a meal. No notice, once at 6 AM after a basketball game with his shop. It was very interesting. After he retired from the Air Force it was hard to cook for just us. I was used to making big meals never knowing how many people I would be feeding. We sailed, boated, fished, and lots of crazy stuff. One of my friends said I should write a book, but nobody would believe our adventures. I miss him every day. We all do. But he taught us to be good little soldiers, pull up our boot straps and go on. So for Mike, I am and so are our children and grandchildren. They have a lot of special memories too. When we are all together we laugh a lot about them. Three grown children and ten grandchildren really keep me busy.
