Mavis's Story
What is that idea about becoming the person I hoped I would be? Well, I 'm still working at it ... and, as time goes by, I believe I'm making some strides -- albeit a bit slower than before.
When I started at Mackenzie I had just moved to this country and had no concept of large cities, nor could I seem to fathom a school that had more students than the town where I had lived. My sisters and I -- and our parents -- were the typical "just off the boat" immigrants; with the advantage, however, of the English language. We were from Scotland by way of several Canadian provinces and cities, and trips back to the Old Country before we settled in the United States.
If I had known the American culture, I would have had a much better -- and vastly less confusing -- high school experience. But, we learn.
After high school, I married a 1960 Mackenzie grad, Bill McKinney. We were married for almost 20 years, until divorcing. We had three lovely daughters, who now are a veterinarian, a nurse and a science teacher, and are raising children of their own. (Yes, I am proud of them.)

ong the way -- a wonderful experience -- and spent many years after on the advisory board for the College of Lifelong Learning. I also have been involved in many other charitable and professional organizations over the years.
I remarried in 1984, and my husband, Craig, and I enjoy one another and spending time with our four daughters and now seven grandchildren.
Professionally, I held several jobs through the years in retail and the production/print side of publishing before joining a community newspaper almost 30 years ago. I have been a librarian/secretary here, a reporter, a news editor, assistant managing editor and, for the past several years, deputy managing editor. I manage the day-to-day newsroom operations of the three newspapers we publish here weekly in 18 communities south and west of Detroit.
I still love my job and the opportunities I have to meet people and to interact with the community, but there are many changes in the newspaper industry these days, so we shall see what the future holds ...
I am interested in hearing about/from former classmates, and wish all of you well.
Slainte,
Mavis
