Max's Story

July 2009 A good life in reflecion. Safe and secure childhood. A little too much focus on being the good boy, until I found those "St Michaels kids" the summer after 8th grade. Hanging around with Tom, Jeff, Mike & Louie was a great time and a great contrast. Is still a strong part of me. Never did learn that romantic thing with girls though. After HS, still so immature, went to Chabot, then UCD and got a degree in Chemistry. Not sure why. School was all I knew so I when to Cal State Hayward to get a HS teaching credential. Not sure why. No jobs arond here so went to Australia to teach HS. At least I knew why. Had a good time. Imagine being so far away, nobody knows you, for the first time in your life you can experiment with who you are without anyone saying "that is not you". Actually learned to like wine in Australia, go figure. Teaching wasn't so great. Liked working with the adults (other teachers) better. After 2 years came back home to see what was next. Happened into job at the Clorox Technical Center in Pleasanton (my mom found the ad in the paper). Found my wife Pam there. House in Livermore. Two boys come along. 30 years later I am so tired of the "middle management, company politics thing" that I decide to retire. I do feel lucky I could do that. Two time cancer survivor (prostate & colon). Unfortunately, my oldest son Danny decides to kill himself the summer after his first year at UCD. My young man, so important to me. Barely 19. My second son, Scotty, has down syndrome and a few other disabilities, but is ...Expand for more
a very happy boy. He is now 24, living on his own with supported living staff to take care of him. He lives less than a mile away and we see him often. He currently attends a day program in Fremont and has a social life we would all envy. Life is busy as a retiree. It has been really great to reconnect with old LHS friends and create a Livermore High School Alumni Association. We are just getting of of the ground after many months of planning and completing the forms to become a 501c3 charity. We hope to do good things for current LHS students, and make life fun for fellow LHS grads that want to work and play with us. Check us out online (try searching for LHSAA). More to come. Max July 2016 An update 7 years later. Pam and I are divorced (legally effective about 3 years ago, apart for over 5 years). Not a friendly parting (she is very angry), but we do have our now 31 yo son Scott to share responsibility for, which requires somewhat regular contact. As I'm sure most of you know, divorces after 35 years of marriage are not easily explained, so I won't try. I am getting old, lost 4+ months this year with damaged back. I'm now coming back and getting into the old physical routine of yard work and dog walking. Oh yeah, I for the first time, have my own dog (Carrie Ann). A 6+ yo rescue dog that is clearly Dachshund + Terrier or Chihuahua. The sweetest girl, very attached and obedient, does great with my son, she is the Best. I have a BLF (best lady friend) to help me have a little social fun in my life. Has still been a good life!
