Max's Story
Hello all!
I still live in the same place I did as in High School. We did upgrade our house but the same farm is what I live on.
I have 4 children and 2 step daughters with my wife Sharon and 30 years of marriage and 20 grandchildren. I am the General Manager of our family farm corporation Smith Fertilizer and Grain. We have 8 Smith families involved in our operation. I also manage SFG Road Maintenance company which sells deicing products in several states. My brother John and I are = partners in our farming operation and family business. This year marks 45 years for me to be employed at SFG and I still answer to my Mother who is 87 years old. (gets easier every year!)
I have been fortunate to have been asked to get involved in Farm Organizations which has led me into leadership training and allowed me to travel several foreign countries to hone my skills that started at Twin Cedars. am currently Chairman of the Iowa Agribusiness Association who recently made it a top priority to assist in developing policy to clean our water supplies of nitrates and recreation areas to modern safe levels for our grandchildren to enjoy for generations to come. We all make a difference in what we do to pass down skills to our families that were passed to us by our parents and teachers that we grew up with.
I am preparing for the last chapter of my working years and doing everything I can to pass on those skills to members of our family business as my parents have done with me. We have given our life to working in Agriculture in Iowa and have been generously rewarded for our efforts. Sharon and I intend to work at reducing our work load in future years and explore what the retirement years can offer us. I am sure we will get involved in those community efforts as it is our nature to share fun with others. Hope to see some of my classmates more and share memories of success over the years.
