Maxine's Story
Life
Been living here in DC for almost 20 years. I work for USAID here--most of my career except a brief stint as a rock and roll journalist right out of college has been devoted to writing, and indigenous and human rights. I have worked on the tribal, national, and international level on these issues. Currently work as the Senior Public Affairs Advisor, Indigenous and Marginalized People. Also make documentaries, study ballet, lift weights, go on road bike tours, go sailing, do disaster response and emergency animal rescue, and lots of beadwork and artwork. It's hard to believe I'm 60 because I feel about 30. My favorite foods are coconut, wild seafood, and peanut butter. My best friend is still my brother Robert.
School
Ms. Cinke taught art, Mr. Irwin, History, and Ms. Garcia PE and dance were my favorite teachers and of course our journalism teacher who we drove nuts--he was amazing. I also enjoyed the teacher who taught EH sutdents where I was a student assistant, Mrs. Tye. I think my education in H.S. was great. I did not really enjoy the social scene. Mostly hung around older people in H.S. Couldn't wait to get out. I threw out my annual during one of my many moves, but won't forget Project Student and the riots in my freshman year. Also, still know Luis Rodriguez, "Joe Aztec." Will always be proud of the pine tree at Christmas in "Marlboro Country," even though I don't smoke. Reconnected with Wendy Shyer (Sales) but could never find Vince Gerlach, Irene Verdugo, and that Hopi kid I befriended in metal shop? I haven't forgotten any of you. You can reach me at roofwalker at verizon.net.
College
Was journalism/psych major in college. College was hard work. Not fun. Worked two jobs, but I partied way, way more than I ever did in high school. I did take a few years off in between to pursue grass roots politics, dance, voice, and drama. This is all very helpful working for the federal government.
Grad school was stellar. I pulled a 4.0 average, got a fellowship, for the first time I found intelligent life on campus.
Workplace
My work has taken me around the world and I'm still on the move. I have worked as a university professor, legislative aide to a tribal government, radio journalist, video director/producer. I do okay working for the Fed, but it does come with sacrifice. These days it's hard. This administration is cruel and mean and seems bent on vilifying and undermining the Federal workforce.
I'm also adjunct faculty at a community college and I write for a Native American newspaper out of Rapid City, SD.
Recently went back to Guam and while I love it there, am considering moving to Big Island, HI when I retire--if it's still there!
Military
I was an astronaut for a while, but I kept getting space sick. Still do love the moon and the stars but these days I view them from down here.
I always wanted to be a astronaut or a ballerina or an actress when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a rotten idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
When I'm angry I go out on my bike or I watch videos and do beadwork.
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have encouragement, purpose, autonomy, and stability to be able to deal with the day-to-day nonsense. I must be creative.
I don't have a hero, but I admire Keith Richards for his FU attitude, Eleanor Roosevelt for her courage, and Crazy Horse for similar reasons.

condemned list and restored. It's very nice. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the backyard and add on a sundeck and a double garage and one extra room. My dream home would be at the beach with a forest and not too far from my office--always close to a city where art, culture, and great restaurants are.
Children: Adopt someone else's.
Nope. Always had my own place. Came from a big family. Don't like sharing a bedroom unless there is committed sex involved.
In 10 years, I hope to be alive and thriving personally and financially. I'm going to get there by taking care of myself and making thoughtful, wise, and careful decisions. Would like to be benefiting from careful financial planning, teaching and writing and staying active--away from DC.
Chris Padilla and I met at a Sweat Lodge we clicked because we both loved to Sweat and party. Loretta and I are also tight. We met working in the music industry. We clicked because we just do. My other best friend is Jan Furukawa on Guam. She's like my sister.
Getting my first bike. Loving my dog. Losing my mom. My childhood was a mixed bag of very sad moments and a few delightful ones. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
I love cycling and ballet. I like Independent Lens, Frontlines, and junk food TV like True Blood and Pan Am and the reboot of Hawaii Five-0. I love my cats. I am obsessed with work, helping animals, creativity, love.
If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to indigenous and animal groups around the world, then spend the rest on making great films and telling great stories, a condo in Hawaii, and Los Angeles, Paris and enjoying my life.
My current age is 60. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be stodgy, boring, fat, inflexible. I was so completely partially wrong. I'm very hip. Many of my age are sadly overweight, inactive, stuck in the 70s, angry, conservative, and not at all fun to hang out with.
To work on indigenous issues and human rights at the UN. To make great documentaries and films and do more creative writing. And of course to join Cirque de Soleil as an aerial dancer or be a ballerina.
My best friend would tell you I'm fun and loyal, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as eccentric, passionate, and sometimes hard to approach.
I'm still hip and wearing size 2. I wear skinny jeans and Doc Martins, but professionally I am very elegant and well put together. Lots of tailored stuff and never, ever frumpy, boho stuff. I am tasteful but I always try to throw something off the wall in. I have two tattoos and 13 holes in my ears. I dress way better than I did ten years ago because I have more money to do it. The 80s was notorious for bad fashion, but I kept a few things that I still wear because they were cool then and they still are.
I share my home with my cats and a tenant in my basement unit, which I find sometimes lonely. The cats are fine. The tenant is very nice.
Big victory. Getting up is a victory. Don't have a mantel. Got a woodstove. There is a buffalo skull on it.
Chris Padilla--met in the Sweat Lodge. We just clicked and we both liked to party. Loretta Ruch. We were both rock journalists and we were instant buds. Jan Furukawa. Met in Hawaii working on native sovereignty. She's a sister from another mother.
My first job was at Taco Bell, where I got paid minimum wage to sling tacos. What I remember most about it is being pushed into the walk in refrigerator with Juan Becerra.
