Maya's Story
After high school, I moved to Santa Barbara. I attended the community college there, where I completed 2 years of undergraduate studies, including biology, film studies, early American literature, environmental science, and poetry.
In 2006, I was accepted as a transfer student to UC Berkeley, which was a surprise. I had also applied to UC Santa Barbara, assuming I'd get in there, and thought that getting into Berkeley was just a fantasy. The strange thing is: UC Santa Barbara rejected my application, and UC Berkeley didn't! Funny how life works sometimes.
I completed one semester there in the Spring of 2007, but the cost of going Cal is very expensive, and I wanted to get going with a career (and move OUT of my mother's house) so I enrolled in the dental assisting program at Western Career College in Pleasant Hill. In 2008 I graduated, but it was very difficult to get a job. Right after I completed school, the economy took a drastic nose dive, and the job market shrank dramatically. Dentists no longer wanted to hire green assistants, they wanted someone with at least 3 years of experience. I decided that there was just something not right --plus, as it turns out, I DON'T like putting my hands in peoples' mouths all day... funny.
Anyway, that same year, I met the man of my dreams and I fell madly in love. Darren proposed in August of '08, and we were married on September 12, 2009. We moved in together and found an affordable apartment in Walnut Creek, which is where we are at this time. Although we don't have children, and don't plan on having them for quite some time, we adore our 5 year old Finley, who is a sweet and spunky Pomeranian/Yorkshire Terrier mix, and his rambunctious feline brothers, Toshi and Akiko.

y life where I feel at peace and I'm enjoying my life. I love my husband. I love my family. I have great friends and make more almost every week. I just started a wonderful job as assistant manager at La Boulange, a French bakery and patisserie in Lafayette - which is the perfect job for me. Food is my passion, and I feel like this is the first step towards a bright future in that venture.
When I'm not working, I spend my time watching movies (my hubby and I are both notorious movie and Netflix addicts), playing with Finley, cooking, reading cook books, camping, reading non-fiction and biographies, going out for sushi in Japan Town in San Francisco, getting lost in the cross-referencing link wonder that is Wikipedia, searching for entertainment on youtube, listening to music, looking at fashion magazines and imagining what I'd buy if money was no object, thinking about and planning my dream kitchen, going for a soak in a hot tub at Family Hot Tubs in Pleasant Hill, eating great food, ignoring the piles of laundry until my husband gets fed up and does them for me, eating more great food, and then while I start to digest it I start thinking about what I want to eat next.
My dreams for the next five years:
Buy a house--or at least rent one
Attend culinary school at DVC for Hotel Management and Hospitality
Get back into shape and maybe even train for some kind of athletic event
Enter a cooking or recipe competition
See Tori Amos in concert AGAIN, because she's one of the best live performers I've ever seen
Take my husband on a surprise vacation
Buy my mom something really special for working so hard as a single mother
Travel somewhere out of the country--ideally: FRANCE
Brush up on my Spanish
