Maya's Story

Life I moved to Albuquerque in the middle of 9th grade at East View Junior High, which prevented me from attending White Plains High School with all of my friends. But I left it in just in case someone wants to get in touch. In Albuquerque, I first went to Manzano High to finish out that year, and then we moved, so I graduated from Eldorado High School. I attended the Eldorado 20th reunion and had a great time connecting with some old friends. Here's what I've been doing: After undergrad at Michigan and grad school at MIT, I moved to DC and worked for 9 years as a policy analyst in the Information Policy and Technology Branch of the Office of Management and Budget (a White House agency). I got to work on a lot of fun emerging technology policy issues, and met the President a few times, but my area of expertise, privacy policy, was ignored for quite a while. Things have changed, and it turns out to be useful and interesting now that privacy is in the paper pretty much every day. In 1995, I decided to attend law school in the evening program at American University, to which the universal response of my friends and family was, "it's about time." After graduation in '99, I clerked for a year on the DC Court of Appeals, and then worked as an attorney in the electronic commerce practice at the DC office of Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson, a major NY corporate law firm. They paid me the going rate, a preposterous sum, which allowed me to buy a beautiful condo near the National Zoo, wher eI still live. Unfortunately, I joined the firm right when the economy was tanking and by the time 9/11 happened,...Expand for more
there was nary any corporate work, and I got laid off along with lots of others. My father died at about the same time, in spring 2002. I went to say Kaddish every day for a year while consulting to pay the mortgage, got active in my synagogue and learned how to read the Torah. My mother thinks I'm going to become a rabbi any day, but really, it was just about getting the secret handshake. When I get the kitchen redone, I'm considering making it kosher. I'm sort of becoming a more observant atheist. I returned to the government as Privacy Advocate of the IRS, a position in the Senior Executive Service, which turned out to be a lousy fit. For the last two years, I have been the Privacy Advocate of HHS, a job I really love. When I get vacation, I like to travel, especially to interesting cities. My last few trips were to Madrid/Barcelona, Prague, and South Africa. Three years ago I decided to check off something on my life list, and I took up swing dancing. It's a blast -- very social, great exercise, and tons of fun. I'm actually getting pretty good at it. As a result, I have been collecting two-tone shoes on eBay, and my coworkers think I may have a little problem. I would like to have a good photo of me doing the lindyhop, but I don't have one yet. As I write this in March 07, I am approaching my 44th birthday, getting ready to undertake a major kitchen renovation, probably the third most expensive thing I've ever purchased in life -- the condo, my law degree, and the kitchen. I have never owned a car, but I'm an avid member of ZipCar, which is cheaper anyway. I love living in DC.
