Carrie's Story
If you remember me at all, you will remember a painfully shy, geeky, oddly dressed girl sometimes known as "The Brain" - not a compliment in those days.
You would be surprised to learn I have become an accomplished public speaker. I love to talk with everyone I meet, and hear their stories.
The teachers I wish I could thank are Mr. Coulter and Miss White, for their compassion and understanding, and Mr. Frank and Mr. Frazier for inspiring teaching.
After North High, I attended Bennington College in Vermont, and except for two visits, in 1955 and 2006, I have never returned to Arizona, even when my father died in 1952. I got my BA in American history, worked briefly for the CIA (dull!), taught elementary school in Maryland. I married a Viennese, moved to Vienna, Rome and Belgrade, had a lovely daughter, got divorced after two and one-half years of marriage.
On my return to the States, I attended Columbia Teachers College for my ABD (All But Degree). I went to work for the New York City Department of Personnel in several capacities. I met my late husband, John, on a blind date. He worked for IBM. We bought a circa 200-year-old farm house in Hyde Park, NY, and added twin daughters, several dogs, untold numbers of cats, ducks, rabbits, a snake who lived in the dining room, and a hermit crab...Expand for more
ditto.
Once the children were in school, I began working for Dutchess County as a civil servant, in the areas of welfare, health care, and information systems. I also served on a number of boards relating to the arts, health care delivery, and local history. I served on local Democratic committees and campaigned hard for several local candidates.
We lived in Hyde Park for 32 years. My husband developed Alzheimer's, and I am very arthritic, so we sold the house and moved in 1999 to West Orange, NJ, to be near a daughter. We chose the right daughter to live near; she has produced three grandchildren. She will go back to being a librarian when her children are all in school. Her twin runs a large program serving the health needs of the elderly in Columbus, Ohio, and my oldest daughter is editor of the European edition of "Stars & Stripes". All three got their master's degrees. All three are happily married.
In NJ I have been heavily involved in a lifelong learning program at Caldwell College, both as a student and a teacher of art history and women's history. I have also travelled internationally and through the US, but this year (2012) took my swansong trip. I write poetry (published), enjoy my three cats, go into New York and Newark for plays, concerts and art. My husband died in 2007.
