Work
As the First Deputy Director of the new Office of Compliance and Chief Compliance Operations Officer for the City of Chicago, I work with a staff of really committed folks in managing a $3.5m budget.
I provide leadership for the design, development and implementation of City of Chicago¿s compliance and ethics program, the nation¿s first such program for a municipality.
My oversight responsibilities include: (1) the implementation of the City's ¿New Hiring Plan" under the Federal "Shakman" Consent Decree to eliminate political patronage from city hiring practices; (2) performance management of the City's Internal Audit Division, EEO/Diversity Division, Legal Compliance Division, Hiring Compliance Division, Training Division and MBE/WBE Compliance Division in the Office of Compliance; (3) management of the City's Helpline complaint process; (4) the review of the performance of governmental officers, employees, functions and programs to detect and prevent noncompliance with all local, state and federal rules and regulations; and to recommend appro...Expand for more

In volunteering as President and CEO of National Institute for Patient Rights (empowerpatients.com), I bring a wealth of experience having previously served as director of two centers for health care ethics, while serving as vice president of programs and publications at a third.
I spent many years at the hospital bedside serving patients and their families. I have also taught ethics for medical, nursing, allied health, and healthcare administration students at various universities.
I have published widely on topics in applied ethics in both professional and popular media, and serve as a consultant in a variety of capacities to numerous hospitals, extended care facilities, and healthcare-related corporations.
