Mel's Story

My life growing up was very protected. My parents kept a close eye on me all of the time. I went to public school through jr. high and then to a private school. I was in the "intermediate level" as far as popularity goes in public school. In private school,I was one of the oldest and coolest guys there! I dated a different girl each year! Even though I was shy and clueless, I was a good kid,did what I was told, never sneaked out of the house at night or anything. When I was 17 I went up to Alaska on a fishing boat for 3 months and it was hell! We worked 16 hours a day and after a week I wanted to go home crying to Mommy! I grew up chopping wood, building stuff, working hard on chores and riding bmx bikes freestyle so I toughed it out. My boss told to me suck it up,work hard, and complete the season, and then go home with some money! From that day on I have had an unrivaled work ethic to always complete the job no matter what the cost. For the next 5 years I worked in the fishing industry. We nearly died one night when a 50 foot wave went through our wheel house(control room) and fried all of our navigational computer equipment and steering! We called the Coast Guard for help and they said that they would NOT come out to help us unless we were sinking! We got no sleep that night as we wore our survival suits and were tossed al...Expand for more
l over the place until the morning! It was that reason, and also all of the waste of ocean life that we caught and then dumped overboard that made me quit. I am a serious conservationist now,I believe that everything has a right to live-unless to give their life up to be food for us humans.(until then, they still need to be treated respectfully!) Okay, let's get back on track. If you have ever watched the show "Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel, then you have watched what I used to do! Once you do that, then everything else seems alot less trivial! As far as doing remodeling work for others.... I have even worked for free near the end of the job just to make people happy. Besides my regular job managing the Engineered Wood department at my work,I enjoy working on other people's houses-and my own(remodeling). I have nearly all of the tools to build a house now and I am close to getting my General Contractors license even though I am in no hurry to do so. I really like to make people happy by building things for them. To see that look of appreciation on their faces is part of my reward. I like to help people when I can,but if I feel like I'm being taken advantage of,then I end it. I really prefer to sail through life with no storms, but I am prepared to Captain the ship if the waters are rough. I wish peace to everyone.
