Melanie's Story
I married My Favorite Thoughtful Fellow, David Moxley, in 1994 in our best man's record shop. We live on the Sunnyflower Farm in mid-Missouri with three cats. Although it's been lovely here, we hope to move someplace warmer in a year or so. Perhaps Florida, or Austin, or California... or New Zealand.
I've just defended a dissertation in philosophy at the University of Missouri, which has been my dream since, well, high school! I took a detour into university development for seven years, but came to my senses and went back to finish my PhD. I am very glad that I did. Now I am excited at the prospect at getting back into teaching again (which I also did for seven years, as a teaching assistant in Ohio and at Mizzou). Conducting a class on Confucius recently reminded me how very fulfilled I am doing that.

frivolous side, I am also a sometime maker and photographer of sock monkeys. If you don't know what a sock monkey is, go to daisycara.com and see! Last year, my "firstborn" sock monkey Daisy Marie won the 3rd Annual Miss Sockford Pageant. She got her picture in the local paper and a mention in the Chicago Tribune, to boot. Good thing she's a level-headed monkey and didn't develop an attitude. I think it's the garden that keeps her grounded.
Many things are changing right now, in very positive ways. I am wishing whomever reads this profile all very good things.
Update 6-30-08:
I'll be teaching three classes this fall here in Columbia! Two will be Introduction to Philosophy at the University of Missouri and the third will be a small readings course on Descartes, Hume and Kant at Columbia College. I'm thrilled.
