Melinda's Story

I have my own marketing consulting company, Melworks Inc.and I'm also a freelance writer on women's issues and film. You can see some of my movie reviews at Rotten Tomatoes or read my stories at Womentics (both on-line magazines, but can't put addresses in here because Classmates won't allow). Prior to that, I was the Executive Director of Brand Atlanta (the city's tourism/economic development initiative, reporting to Mayor Shirley Frankilin). I have been married for 28 years to Bert Roughton, the Managing Editor of the Atlanta Journal Consitituion (the city's major daily newspaper). I have two sons, Christian who is 16 and a Junior at the Paideia School and Bert III, who just graduated from New York Law School and is working in the Atlanta Fulton County Public Defender's Office and waiting for results from his bar exam! Our family lived in a village just outside of London for three years, from 1998-2001, while my husband was European Bureau Chief for ...Expand for more
Cox Newspapers. It was an unforgettable experience and we got to travel all over Europe as a family (and go to Paris for the weekends). We returned to our house in Atlanta (which we leased while we were gone) just two weeks before 9/11. It was perfect timing because I would not have wanted to make all those trips back and forth across the pond with my boys in the year or two following that terrible event. We have been back in our Atlanta home since that time----a house we built in the intown neighborhood of Virginia Higland (which is like a village) over 16 years ago. We have a new pup named Josie (a rescue border collie mix). We also have a small vacation home at St. Simons Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia where we plan to one day live out the rest of our lives. My Mom and Dad are retired and now living in Kennett, Mo, about 100 miles from Memphis. And both of my brothers live in Birmingham. We are a very lucky family in many ways.
