Melinda's Story

Life I have two daughters from my husband's previous marriage and have raised them since they were very young. The eldest, at 32 is engaged and the younger is 31 and was married last May. Currently, we are working on the final renovation of our house (a proj. that was thought to take a few months and cost less than 10K)and it has been 6 months of living in the kitchen and bedroom (and alot more $$$)! I have done all of the rip-out and painting myself and am looking forward to decorating the interior, sewing new drapes, etc. For "fun" (there is work involved with sailing!) we sail on the Hudson River every opportunity that we can get...unfortunately, "upkeep" on a 40 yr. old boat is very time consuming but well worth it when she is looking like the "grand lady" that she is. She was custom built in Cape Cod, has lots of wood and a big cockpit that can hold 10 people (we are rarely short of eager passengers)! I met my husband of 26 yrs. while we were both working for a petrochemical R&D facility as bench chemists. Since then, our careers have branched out. Husband works for a major analytical instrumentation co. as a LIMS and product specialist with emphasis on software design and product development. I am now a certified industrial hygienist, own my own consulting business and specialize in health, safety and environment for industry, academic institutions and Superfund sites (regulatory compliance for OSHA and EPA). It is essentially evaluating personal exposures to chemical and physical hazards. It is challenging and keeps me very busy with research and travel (and meetings, report generation, liason with regulators, and "putting out fires"...very frustrating)! My husband commutes to CT, 98 miles each way, and the traffic is horrific (usually 2.5 hours each way). We rarely see each other and often do not sit down to eat until 9PM each night. Probably why we have stayed together for so long. Our dogs, adopted from the animal shelter as pups, suffer the most: one is shepherd, hound, collie mix and the other (that I thought was going to be a lab) has grown to be a whiny pit bull mix. Both dogs are extremely loveable and gentle, but at 90 lbs. each, they scare any visitors that come to the house! They really aren't good watch dogs since they will jump and lick any stranger that they meet (LOL)! Most of my family still live close by in the village of Sloatsburg, Suffern and Warwick. We bought the house that I lived in when I went to SHS and it is still considered as the "family homestead". Until recently, all family holidays have been celebrated here so I had some respite from entertaining this past Thanksgiving and Xmas. This coming season will be a different story now that the renovation is near completion. I am looking forward to entertaining again...I love to cook and no one ever refuses an invite....excluding family, they don't need an invitation. In fact, our house has an "open door" policy (no knocking or door bell) just walk right in. Most of my family spends the summers on our deck and swimming in the pool. My old friends at SHS/college have an "open invitation" to visit us anytime...just call me first so I have a chance to remember who you are....getting old and my memory isn't what it use...Expand for more
d to be! School I attended Middlebush Elementary, Sampson G. Smith Intermediate and a few months at Franklin HS. Our family moved to my Mother's hometown of Sloatsburg, NY in late 1969. I have many fond memories of the friendships that I had made at the schools in NJ. The teachers at Middlebush were fantastic and I remember Mrs. Jubon taking us to the farm to get cream and then making butter in the classroom; the Diamente sisters (3rd and 4th gr.); split sessions in 5th gr.; and Mrs. Stout in 6th (and the trip to Stoke's State Park). I recall that 7th gr. was not that much fun since we had to go to FHS and there were riots but 8th gr.at SGS made up for it! I enjoyed being in the singing group and I made more friends and deepened the ones that I had made at Middlebush (e.g. Joanne P., Kathy S., Ann Marie P., Barbara ? and Sharon D.). It was difficult assimilating into Suffern but by sophmore year I had developed many new relationships. By graduation time, I had many GOOD and dear friends (some that I keep in contact with to this day). I loved my time in the later years at SHS and most of the teachers were fantastic. I especially loved Mr. Foy...he made me think! I had crushes on a number of guys in HS but the best guy for me was Fred Boy. I was shattered when he broke up with me in the 1st semester of college. But college was another chapter. I went to SUNY Fredonia and met many great people there...however, Brian Connor (rest his soul) was one of my most faithful SHS friends and I miss him to this day. We spent a lot of good times together with his roomies and he always "looked out for me". I loved Fredonia and most of the people that I met. Gillian B. was my roomie for soph and jr. years and I have VERY fond memories of our exploits (not to be described here), likewise my wonderful times with Michael P.! The trip to FL with "Nuns Incognito" will always be a great memory!! I majored in Chemistry but thought that I would never find a job as a chemist (I truly wanted to go to Med School but there were 5 siblings behind me waiting for "higher education"....my parents were eventually able to see all 6 kids receive college degrees!). Finished sr. yr. as an intern at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester for Medical Technology. Have great memories there, too! Afterwards, I knew that I didn't want to work as a MT, even though I passed the cert. exam with great marks. I was VERY fortunate to land a job at a chemical research company as a bench chemist and I enjoyed the experience tremendously. That is where I met my husband and also entered into a new field: industrial hygiene. I truly enjoyed all of my school experiences (except 7th grade when my parents were having marital problems....in that day, it was very taboo to even mention "separation" let alone "divorce"). In NJ, we were faithful parishioners of St. Peter's in New Brunswick and then St. Matthias (on JFK Blvd.?). Bad memories of having to attend "summer program" at St. Matthias...so boring!!! But I was "communioned" at St. Peter's and "confirmed" at St. Matthias. I have so many memories of both NJ and NY schools. If anyone would like to "share" memories with me, I would be more than happy to respond! I do miss my friends from all of the schools!
