Melinda's Story

I lived in Humboldt County for about eight years after leaving Tehachapi and went to school there for about 6-1/2 years up there with my sisters Heidi and Jennifer. I lived in Morgantown, WV for about a year after that, then moved back to Tehach and took a job working for Enron Wind in January of 2000, and have been working for GE Wind since they bought us out of Enron's Corporate bankruptcy. Building wind turbines is the love of my life. I live and breathe to be a part of the wind industry, and I'm pretty sure that it's wind blowing through my veins, not blood flowing. I took an offer to move to the Pensacola, FL in the summer of 2005, and have been working (and sweating) here since then. It is hotter than three hells here, and it gets flatter here the longer I'm here. And humid! Oh god, how it is humid! It's all right though... I live right on the Gulf of Mexico, I've been learning to throw cast nets and fish in the Gulf of Mexico, and have found happiness and peace in that. I was under the mistaken impression that it was too swampy here to ride quads here, but found out just how wrong I was. I do take runs up to my friend's farm up in Statesboro, Georgia to ride shoot my pistol (a Springfield XD-40) whenever I get the chance. That was where I learned how wrong I wa...Expand for more
s about riding here. It is very different from riding in the Mojave or the Sierras, but is EVERY DAMN BIT as dangerous and thrilling. The hazards of riding here are just completely different from home. Did ya see the picture of me and my prize (to-date) catch out of the Gulf of Mexico?? A 7-pound Red Snapper!! Woo woo! Goooooooddd eatin'!! I'll be the first to admit that I am not a GOOD fisherman, but I LOVE to fish, and that's what counts. I've also been spending some weekends in Waterhole Branch, Alabama, just outside of Fairhope with some musicians, artists, and authors who I've met in my travels here. It has become a haven of sorts for me... Reminds me a lot of Humboldt. I miss the mountains, the deserts, my family, and old friends back home more than I know how to express but, as I mentioned above, have found solitude in fishing, riding, and shooting. I've been here since August of 2005, and it has been a cultural and climate shock to me, but now that I have finished school, have been able to enjoy some of the things that I enjoyed doing back home. I don't think I'll ever get over it being hotter than the devil's foot here, but, have made some amazing and incredible friends down here. I do miss my beautiful home in the mountains and high desert of California.
