Melissa's Story
Life
After I graduated from SWHS I went to UConn and graduated with a BachelorÂs in Biology. Now that was useful. I worked in a Marine Biology laboratory for 2 years after college, studying crab hormones. Suitably strange and interesting, but monotonous nevertheless, except for the summer I got to spend on Cape Cod, which was cool.
In 1986 I got serious about life and went to medical school in Philadelphia. I got there just in time for the big garbage strike. A fine introduction to city living!
In the middle of medical school I took a (very) little time off to marry one of our classmates, David Stewart. I graduated in 1990. After that I did a Psychiatry Residency at UConn in Farmington and the Institute of Living in Hartford. In 1993 I went to Albuquerque, New Mexico and did a Child Psychiatry Residency at the University of New Mexico. NM is one of the most starkly beautiful places in the world. ItÂs kind of like Mars with a few trees. I really enjoyed working with the Acoma ...Expand for more
Indians there.
After I finished my training I worked at a Community Mental Health Center in Wilmington, NC from 1995 to April of this year. Wilmington is in the southeastern corner of the state, on the shore. It is also known by the locals as ÂHurricane CentralÂ. We had 5 major hurricanes in 3 years. Got to hone those chain saw skills.
April of 2002 we opted for a little change in scenery and moved to the island of Kauai, the other most beautiful place in the world. It looks like New Mexico with green stuff all over it. I am working as the Clinical Director of the Kauai Family Guidance Center. I love my job (well, sometimes anyway) and I love Kauai. We have no kids except two very strange little dogs, and maybe the horse across the street. I love my job (well, sometimes anyway) and I love Kauai.
