Melissa's Story

Life Life. . . hmmm. . . life is good. :) Currently I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and have been married for almost nine years to the love of my life Kris. He is in the Air Force so in 2000 we moved to sunny Los Angeles - quite a shock for a Montana girl. It was a great exprerience and we met many life-long friends there but I'm not sure I would ever want to live there for a long period of time. After about four years there we were transferred to Salt Lake City. It's been quite a refreshing time here with the mountains and all the outdoor stuff that Utah is famous for. Utah is a much better 'fit' for us. We don't have children yet much to the disappointment of the in-laws, we've just been too selfish I guess and enjoying our time together. We are actively involved in our church and thank God for all He's done in our lives. I know this is supposed to be a BIO but I hope you are all doing well and I would love to catch up with some of you sometime! Drop me an e-mail! School Oh I'm so embarassed . . . my crushes were Josh Clayton and M.J. Lehman. I'm sitting here laughing at the silliness of it all. I would have to say that my most inspirational teacher(s) were Mr. Abbas, Mr. Larson, and Mrs. Price. There are more but in retrospect these three really had a hand in shaping the person I am today. I'm not sure I would do it all over again. There were a million things I loved about high school, but there are a million things I love about after high school. If I did get a 'do over' I would probably take the whole academic part a little more seriously, and I would have tried to make some more life-long friendships. I have lost touch with several of my friends and I hope to someday reconnect with them. College After high school I went straight to UGF and got a Bachelors in Business Administration. I soon realized that nothing about business really captivated me and I couldn't envision myself working in that field for long. After we moved to L.A. I started going back to school for Forensic Science - lots of Chemistry and fun stuff like that! I had always excelled in the sciences and had always been fascinated with law enforcment and law in general but I never really wan...Expand for more
ted to be a cop, detective, or lawyer. When I discovered there was a science side to law enforcement I knew I had found my career 'calling.' When we moved to Salt Lake City in 2004 I transferred to Weber State University which is number three in the nation for Forensic Science. I graduated with a degree in Criminalistics (Forensic Science) in feeling like I had been in school my whole life . . well I basically had. Workplace I am currently employed at the Salt Lake City Police Department Crime Laboratory as a Forensic/Crime Scene Investigator. There is never a dull moment and the job fits me well. I was chosen for the position out of 88 candidates, a fact that still astounds me today. I attribute it to my great education at GFHS! I don't regret not settling for a job in something I didn't love and going back to school. I cannot wait to go to work - most days. Since I get bored easily, one of the things I love about the job is that it is never the same. Every case is different, and every case represents people's lives. Once in a while the huge burden of responsibility hits me - my work can determine whether a person goes to jail for a long time, or whether a family has closure after the tragic loss of a loved one. Being subpeonaed by the courts is the least 'fun' part of the job. Having your work examined by a judge, jury, media, etc. is not a pleasant perk. My latest epiphany from recent cases I've been on is always, always wear your seat belts and if you can, and buy a vehicle with as many aigbags as possible. May sound cheesy, but trust me on this one! :) Military In high school, I had a fleeting moment when I considered joining the military, but it passed. However, I inadvertently joined when I married my husband. Many people see it as a negative thing, but it's been great moving around and seeing the country. My husband is a Major now and is in more of a manager type position. His degree is in Electrical Engineering and Aerospace something-or-other so he oversees the engineers working on a particular aircraft. For all of you who have served in the armed forces or have spouses who have served, I respect you and thank you for your sacrifice for our country.
