Melody's Story
After high school I joined the Navy. I went to B.O.O.S.T. in July 1994 at the Naval Education and Training Center in Newport, RI. I graduated from the program the following year and received an NROTC scholarship. I attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA from 1995 - 2000 where I majored in Nursing and minored in Naval Studies. During my time there I had a car accident that injured my back and I was stabbed by one of my roommates during an argument. I was honorably discharged from the Navy due to health reasons in 2000 and I dropped out of college. As depressing as this story may sounds, it does get better!
I really did like the Navy. I met a lot of interesting people there. College on the other hand, just wasn't working out. Since I wasn't in the Navy anymore, I had to go to work. I got a job working at one of the casinos in Baton Rouge, Casino Rouge, as a cashier. I did that for a while but then I found out that the real money was in being a Casino Dealer so I decided to pursue that. Since there weren't any opening for dealers at the "Rouge", I moved ...Expand for more
on to Argosy Casino. I was a dealer there for about 5 years. During my time there, I decided to finally go back to school, but this time I went to a technical school...much cheaper than college!
I attended Louisiana Technical College from 2003 - 2004 where I earned a Diploma in Computer Networking. I found my calling...Computers! Far stretch from Nursing, I know, but I'm good at it. Soon after graduating I took on a job at the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. I worked there in the day and at the casino at night because my first computer job didn't pay much, but I wanted to get the experience. I also worked some contract jobs on the side to build up the resume. About 9 months later, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. While this storm devastated them, it provided me with a unique opportunity. I was offered a job at Ciber, Inc. At the time they were the new IT contractors for the city. I was hired as a Helpdesk Technician and later promoted to a Network Engineer, one of a group of three counting my immediate supervisor. Together we run the city's network.
