Elizabeth M's Story
Life
Born in Bentley,Kansas. Moved to Susanville in 1940. Moved to Janesville the second half of the 3rd grade. Moved to the Missouri Bend School District the second half of the 6th grade.
Hated riding the bus into Susanville to go to High School, but loved all the classes available to me. When not in class my favorite place was the library. My friend, Phyllis Jeter used to say I would disappear into the library.
After graduation I applied for work at every business in Susanville. The only job I found was as a nanny.
In June of 1955 my Uncle sent word of openings at the Naval Base where he worked. I Arrived at China Lake, Ca. on a Wednesday and started working the following Monday. I was hired as "The Assistant to the Head Librarian". The work was perfect for me and I gradually worked my way from trainee to head librarian for the last 20 years of my career. I had a wonderfull career of 42 years. One of the things I enjoyed about my job as librarian was the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Scientists and military personnel from other nations came to China Lake for training, conferences, etc. and spent many of their free hours in the library.
My education didn't stop with High School. I took every clas...Expand for more
s offered by the government -- Supervision, Personnel Management, Fiscal Management, etc. I also took extenstion classes from Universities offering classes locally. When Ridgecrest established it's own Junior College I began taking course there and continued to do so throughout my career.
Was married 1956 to 1977, had two children, April (1959) & Anthony (1962). Was involved in the children's activities as room mother, sports Mom, chaperone, etc.
Married Louis (father of 4)in 1981. Between us we have 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
We both retired January 1997 and have been enjoying traveling, hiking, hobbies, volunteering, and spending more time at our cabin in the Lake Isabella area.
Recently our activities have been curtailed by Lou's macular degeneration and my own health. We mostly stay at home and work on hobbies. I spend a lot of time on genealogy, writing down my memories and reading. My reading is eclectic...my husband says I read anything with print on it!
We celebrated our 25th anniversary on May 29, 2006. My dear Lou passed away on August 7, 2006. I am thankful for the time we had together, but I miss him so very much. Fortunately I have the support of a very large extended family.
