Melvin's Story
I have been married for 24 years now and my Wife and I moved south to Fl in 1986. Much warmer here, I never liked the cold weather. We have two sons. The oldest is 18 and in his first year of college at the local community college. His dream is to get into film and theatre. Our younger son is almost 17 and he has Autism. Because of him we have become very involved in many groups revolving around Autism and Special Needs Disabilities over the years.
We started and ran the Special Needs Ministry at our church for many years along with running support groups, working with special needs schools and so on. We have now started a non profit organization called Racing For A Cure, racingcure.org. Our goal is to raise money to help people with special needs disabilities. We use a racing theme in our fundraisers mostly because I am a big race fan but as parents of a child with special needs, we are in a race to find a cure for all of these different disabilities that children suffer from.

r child suffer from one of these disabilities. It not only strikes the child physically or mentally or both, but it strikes the whole family. The divorce rate among special needs families is 80 to 90 percent. Most of them end up in financial ruin from the medical expense. It is just a tough life for the whole family.
We raise money for research, educational programs, medical treatments and programs that will make the quality of life for our special needs friends and their families just a little bit better. By the grace of God and the help we received from many great people, our son is doing much better now and has a hope for a great future. Because of that, we want to help others through there very tough times with special needs disabilities so that they can find hope for a better life.
