Melvin's Story

Life SERGEANT MAJOR MELVIN O'NEAL CHESTNUT UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS Sergeant Major Chestnut was born in Sumter, South Carolina on May 25, 1960 to Joseph and Mable Chestnut. He have six sisters (Mildred, Helen, Mary, Thomasena, Rebecca and Delphine), and three brothers (Joseph Jr, Walter and Alphonso). He entered the Marine Corps on June 16, 1978 and attended recruit training at Paris Island South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training, he attended the Infantry Training School (ITS) at Camp Pendleton where he was designated the MOS of 0311. Upon completion of Infantry Training School, he was assigned to Marine Barracks, Hawaii. After completion of his tour in 1980, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marines Camp Pendleton where he served as a Fire-team and Squad leader. During this tour he completed a six month deployment to Okinawa, Japan. In 1982, after re-enlisting, he was assigned to Weapons Training Battalion, Paris Island South Carolina. During this time he served a Range Coach, Block NCO, Tower NCO and assistant Line NCO. After again re-enlisting in 1984, he returned to Camp Pendleton, where he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines as a Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. During this tour he completed six month Westpac deployment aboard the USS Cayuga. In August 1986, he volunteered and received orders to Drill Instructor School, San Diego, California. Upon completion of Drill Instructor School, he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, where he served as Drill Instructor and then later as a Field Instructor as part of the new Basic Warrior Training Program. Upon completion of this tour and being promoted to SSgt, he transferred to 1st Battalion 8th Marines, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During this time he served as a Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander, Assistant Operations Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant. While with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, he completed two six months Mediterranean deployments aboard the USS Iwo Jima and USS Saipan; and participated in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1992 he again requested and received orders to Drill Instructor School, San Diego, California. After five weeks of school, he was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion where he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Series Gunnery Sergeant. In September 1994, he was assigned to the Drill Instructor School Staff as the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Instructor and a Squad Instructor. ning and Special Projects Chief. During October of 1996 he again returned to Camp Pendleton with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines where he served as the Company First Sergeant and then the Company Gunnery Sergeant. During this tour, he completed another six month deployment to Okinawa, Japan. During March of 1998 and during the relocation of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines to 29 Palms, he was transferred to the Command Element of the 13th MEU as the Headquarters Commandant. During this tour he completed another six month Westpac aboard the USS Boxer. In June of 1999 and after promotion to First Sergeant, he was again assigned to MCRD, San Diego, California, as the First Sergeant of Alpha Company 1st Battalion. During September 2000 he was re-assigned as the First Sergeant of Headquarters Battery, 11th Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton where he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 1 June 2003 while returning from OIF aboard the USS Boxer, he was promoted to his final rank of Sergeant Major and on 31 July 2003 assumed duties as the Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 38 Sergeant Major where he deployed to Al Asad, Iraq in support of OIF 2.1 from February to July 2004. On 8 October 2004 he was relieved of his duties and on 29 October 2004 was posted as the Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38 Sergeant Major. On 13 January 2006, he assumed the duties as the Marine Air Control Group 38 (Rear) and Marine Wing Support Group 37 (Rear) Sergeant Major. On 29 January 2007, he assumed all duties as the Marine Air Control Group 38 Sergeant Major until 11 December 2007. SgtMaj Chestnut retired on June 30, 2008 from the United States Marine Corps with 30 years of honorable service to God, Country, Corps and Family. On June 16, 2008, he hired by a company named Service Group Inc to work as the Project Manager of a Safety Ambassador program. On July 8, 2009, after the project was up and running, Melvin returned to the retired life. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expedition Medal, Combat Action, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/star, Good Conduct Medal (9th award), National Defense Medal w/star, South West Asia Medal w/3 stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/silver and 3 bronze star, Drill Instructor Ribbon w/star, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) and the Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal He is currently married to the former Beverly R. Freeman of LaGrange Georgia. He have two sons, Melvin II and Brodric
