Ricky's Story
October 25, 2008
Hi everybody!
I moved to Roanoke a few weeks after I graduated from High School. I started driving and loading trucks for a few months. In 1980 I went to work for the N&W Railway, as a Conductor. A couple years later I got married to Beth, a girl I met in Roanoke, and we had 3 children. In 1988 I took a buy-out and quit the railroad. I had a small car dealership for a few years, a waterbed shop in Radford, I coached baseball and basketball, ran a cub scout program, and worked with the youth group at church. I sold Insurance, part time and had a few other small ventures. I have always stayed busy doing many different things at a time. It keeps me out of trouble. For about about 8 or 9 years I was a contractor, doing commercial and residential Renovations, and construction. I fell once and was injured pretty bad and shortly after that, I developed a bone disease in my Hips called Avascular Necrosis, which resulted in me having total hip replacement to both hips. My wife and I seperated, I lost my home, and I spent 4-5 years at home having 4 surguries and raising 4 kids on my own. Oh yeah, I had a 4th child by another woman and have had custody of her since birth. WOW that was a mouth full!!!!!!!!
In 2004 I went to a truck driving school and bought a Truck. So for the last five years, I've been driving my truck. I am now living with 3 of my kids and my 83 year old aunt. My aunt helps out with my kids when I'm on the road. I used to Run to California 2-3 times a month and a lot of other places from coast to coast. Now, until about a month ago, I have been hauling overseas containers out of the ship ports in Norfolk, which gets me home a few times during the week and most weekends. Ive drove that truck close to 800,000 miles in about five years, and I spend a lot of my weekends working on it. I've ...Expand for more
become a shade tree truck mechanic too!! Not by choice, but by necessity.
Almost three months ago. I slipped and fell off my truck and messed up my knee pretty bad, and continued to drive, wearing a knee brace, and on crutches. Then about a month ago, my back went out too. So for the last month, I've been home, spending time with my kids, going to doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists. That's why I have the time to sit and write this now. I just went to Norfolk yesterday and picked up my truck, where it has been for the last month, and am planning to get my own authority and start my own trucking company.
Any of you who know me well, know what a big dreamer I am. Things are kinda tuff right now, but I've been through worse, and with the right attitude, I'll be back on my feet again soon.
I still love things like, concerts, amuesment parks, (I ride just about anything) Nascar Racing, Air shows, Ball games, riding my wave runner, 4 Wheeling in my jeep, taking rides on the parkway, playing with my kids, church, and sometimes the party animal still comes out in me. I like to laugh, have fun, and enjoy life. After all, It's impossible to feel down when you're laughing and smiling.
I miss my High school friends and would enjoy hearing from any of you.
Right now, I've got to get away from this computer and take care of a few things.
See Ya Later
Rick!!!
Update Dec 08,2008
Since I've been off work I've enjoyed messing around on the CPU again. Since web surfing is the only kind I can do given my present physical condition and it's something I haven't done for a while. I have already met a couple of friends that I haven't seen for a long time thru classmates and am planning to meet with more. I am having a re-constructive knee operation Jan 5, 2009 and will be off for 3 months after that.
Have a Merry Christmas!!!
