Melvin's Story
I graduated from Watonga High School In 1959. I attended OSU in the fall, returning to Watonga in the Spring of 1960. I worked the summer as a life guard at Roman Nose. During the summer I met this sweet young girl from Del City, Okla. We were united in marriage on 12-2-1960 and have remained together to this date. We made our home in the Oklahoma City area, where we still live. We have two (2) children, a son born on 1-5-63 (Michael), and a daughter born on 6-25-68 (Michelle). They have blessed us with four (4) granddaughters ranging in age from 23-17. The 23 year old graduated this past year from OSU with a major in Hotel and Restaurant Management. She along with a friend are currently on an year long venture to New Zealand. We have two (2) that are currently seniors at MWC High School. They both plan to attend OSU this fall. sold the business to my children and one of the employees at the end of 2008. Since then I have kept active by becoming a vegetable/flower gardener. Utilizing available land located at the Church of Christ congregation in Del City (where we are members), I along with several others have been able to develop quite a vegetable garden. This past growing season we gave away to families in the community somewhere between 15,000-20,000 pounds of vegetables. We have developed a park that covers approx. 1 1/2 acres where we grow thousands of flowers each year. We have our own Greenhouse where we start flowers from plugs, then transfer them into beds at the appropriate time. We will start the growing season again soon with the planting of: Potatoes, Beets, Turnips, Radishes, Onions, etc. with several other additions after frost. Wait till mid to late May and come see our work.
