Melvin's Story

I don't know if I get more exercise fishing in the summer or sledding in the winter but having an active life is great. Back home in Alaska after a nice trip to Las Vegas for an annual reunion with some of my platoon from the 2/327th Inf,101st Abn. there were some great visits to tourist spots. The Museum of the Desert, Shelby Museum and autoworks where it gave me goosebumps to stand next to Carroll Shelby's original Cobra and personal car, but it was behind ropes and, valued at over $26million, untouchable. The next stop was the recently opened Casa de Shenandoah - home of "Mr. Las Vegas," Wayne Newton which was an incredible tour where while standing in the doorway to the billiards room listening to the tour guide tell about the crystal billiards table my hand settled on something so I looked down at what it was...a gold framed painting of Sunflowers, by Van Gogh worth at least $50million. I walked through the room where Ron Reagan sat and sat in George H W Bush's favorite spot on Wayne's jet to play Gin Rummy. Have been kissed by some of the most beautiful women in movies, TV, and Playboy. So many people who I meet go on to become huge stars...it is something that comes from my abilities as a mystic; there may be something that they need from me to continue. With Al Pacino it was a hit of acid during Mardi Gras in '72, Men At Work were advised by an astrology reading from me to stay in the US and record an album. At Morningside it was Vicki Lawrence who I gave the role of Winifred to in Once Upon A Mattress then went to Carole Burnett with an invitation and tickets. I consider it a Midas Touch and since spending three hours with Super Cr3w, I have a feeling a superstar is about to emerge. There are few people that I remember from high school. I was the youngest male in the class of '65. Nancy Jo Blair is a day younger. Over time I spent 14 years in college full time for myself and an equal amount of time with clients while I worked as a sign language interpreter. I have also done enough alcohol and drugs to put Hunter S Thompson to shame so my memory is somewhat blurred then blended and sometimes I think "I wish I could remember their name" but I do know that I made it through relatively unharmed. I spent all the money so I have lots of memories. Living on pensions, dividends and a paltry amount of SS (they were right in high school: there is no money left in SS) If you remember me please message me to refresh my mind. Nothing could have prepared me for life more Morningside HS where there were some people, even teachers, determined to ruin my life. When I look back, maybe it is because I smelled like a horse. Looking back over the years I know how smells linger, cigars, cigarettes, pot, manure...Brut reminds me of school My race horse, Triple Sail won most of his races for me, because as a rescue, he was broke down when I got him as a freshman living in the same barn, he raced just a few times a year. We spent our summers at Del Mar where he swam into condition. I did not start school my senior year because it was hard to find a race for him. He finally made his last start on opening day at the final Tanforan race-meet. I bet my wad and at over 100-to-1 and he was far in front when his right tendon blew at the eighth pole , refusing to quit he raced on then his left tendon bowed at the sixteenth yet he boldly held the lead to the finish. There was no winner's circle picture that day, he was again hauled off the track in an ambulance, but Triple Sail knew he had won. He ate his victory meal and I flew home to reluctantly finish high school. A racehorse through and through.I was lucky that high school was only a part of my life. High School can be difficult for a person if they allow it to get to them, but it gave me strength and determination that has allowed me to succeed at the impossible and cope with combat induced PTSD. After my graduation from Morningside I went about gathering a stable of racehorses that I took to Del Mar that Summer of '65 . I kept active training horses for about a year until labor took a toll on me and...Expand for more
I designed a device to walk horses, that quickly revolutionized the horse industry and set me up for other successes. Charlie Wittingham taught me that "When you are a winner, people will give you their bankroll!" I soon followed that success with another career as a jockeys agent before entering the Army in "68 as an unwilling soldier (Draftee) A Vietnam combat veteran of 101st Airborne,2nd/327th Inf (America's most decorated fighting unit) Much like a Ninja, I am a chameleon, who has raised millions for charity while managing foundations or assisting others yet remaining obscure. As a political activist and publisher, my causes have been successfully represented in the US Supreme court three times. I worked tirelessly to see prop 13 passed in '82, As a gifted astrologer I have had success finding 'lost' people, been a: a cowboy, singer, musician, beachcomber, hippie, businessman or frontiersman a trueeclectic in all of my tastes, from music to food, and prefer the company of misfits, though you will see some my friends names in history books, the credits of movies, TV shows or sports events. Because of my lifelong involvement in horse racing, I have known some of the movers and shakers of the 20th Century and still visit with many hall of farmers when I go to California for the races. They promote an unfounded rumor that I am a rich Alaskan oilman. In HS, I preferred playing football and hanging out with my hero, with Audie Murphy on the athletic field at Hollywood Park to being with my classmates. I was also befriended by the venerable Omar Bradley who set up a code with me to send him messages of a horses expected success by tying a blue ribbon to the horses fore-mane. That relationship paid off well when I was a Drill Sargent at Ft Ord with a standing order for weekly three day passes! Being very insecure, because I am prone to side effects of PTSD, I give the impression of confidence and have made a great living in show business mostly as a pitchman, but also in a few movies, (Arnold Schwarzenegger killed me in 'Commando') even though I suffer from stage fright and have fainted a few times on stage. To overcome fears it is best to face them head on and attack when necessary, a tactic I learned from reading "Will" by G Gordon Liddy. I love biographies and try to learn some new thing about history on a daily basis. I am a constant tourist and collect National Park visitor stamps. Today I am content living as a grandfather frontiersman in a home surrounded by the Kenai Wildlife sanctuary where I can see a few dozen glaciers on a clear day out my front window and active volcanoes out the back and catch a trophy size Rainbow Trout, Salmon or Halibut with almost every cast. I enjoy simple things like helping neighbors build houses and fix cars. And am building a new home for myself this summer. I have never had a credit card and pay cash for everything, even my home! Family vacations are very important to me and I make yearly trips to a Disney destination and love how Disney creates the perfect cruise for whole families. We will spend three days at the resort in Orlando before cruising out of Port Canaveral for the Bahamas. I have derived a lifelong of satisfaction from helping those who could not help themselves, raising millions for worthwhile causes. My greatest success and accomplishment to date has been as an involved grandfather who gets up every school day and drives into town to be my grand kids personal short order breakfast cook! Knowing family through family meals and prayer are important. Though I started out very liberal I am very conservative today. I have no TV but when visiting friends who are watching I have learned to keep it to myself that at least one or two of the main actors were friends of mine...a little too much information for those on the edge of a wilderness. It has been a great pleasure to live in Alaska where the population is small and politicians are so familiar that a senator may call to see if you would round up some friends for a chat over coffee...even Sarah Palin sends me greeting cards.
