Melvin's Story
Readers digest version: 1974 I married Jane Hulce (LHS class of 1974). 2 married Daughters, and 4 Grandsons. Soldier Active and Reserves (3/3/1972-3/24/2008, 36 years 21 days). Iraq veteran (2006-2007), Bronze Star, Realtor(r) since 1986. Founded Disabled Veterans SCUBA Project a California 501(c)(3). Live in Lakewood CA. SCUBA instructor to the handicapped, NAUI and Handicapped SCUBA Association.
The details:
Joined the Army Reserves March 03, 1972 on delayed enlistment. June 1972 Graduated high school and reported for duty in the US Army 2 days after picking up my diploma. 2 weeks later I received my draft notice (number 32 if I remember righ in the lottery). Assigned as and Infantry private 1st Battalion 508th Infantry (Airborne) 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg NC.
1974 promoted to Sergeant. I bought a house and married Jane Hulce, Lakewood High Class of 1974. We met in high school but did not date. I was a pen pal with her 1972-1974 and then we married.
1977-1979 Methodist College at night 12 hours a semester at night, still in the Army. Graduated 1979 with a Bachelors degree in Business Admin/Economics.
1979 Staff Sergeant, I went to Officer Candidate school Ft. Benning GA.
1980 -1983 Commissioned Lieutenant in the Infantry assigned to 2/6 Infantry, The Berlin Brigade, Berlin Germany. Served as platoon leader and for 9 months as the Commander of the US Army Duty Train ruining 110 miles through East Germany to West Germany. Life behind the iron curtain in the Army of Occupation was interesting.
1981 Became a father to a beautiful daughter Sarah.
1983 I was rifted, (the army laid me off) and transferred to the inactive Reserve. Moved first to Dallas TX for a year.
1984 My youngest Bethany was...Expand for more
born Plano Texas. Moved back to Lakewood California in December.
1986 Started working in Real Estate full time. Still in the Army Reserves.
1995 Started Pasley Realty and continued in the Army Reserves.
2001 Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.
May 7, 2006 - the Army mobilized me for duty in Iraq. My oldest daughter graduated from college May 31. I got to see her walk on the internet. In June 2006 my youngest got married, they sent me pictures. I was assigned as an Adviser to the Iraqi Security Forces (Special Police Commandos, renamed the National Police) Baghdad Iraq.
December 25, 2007 Discharged from active duty with a Bronze Star for my war service in Iraq.
March 24, after 36 years 21 days I retired from the USAR having reached (passed) my maximum allowable years of service as a Lt Col.
April 2008 my oldest daughter made me grandfather for the first time. Healthy boy.
Feb 2009 my youngest daughter gave me my second grandson. I also started a 501(c)(3) non-profit that month called the Disabled Veterans SCUBA Project (run it together as one word and ad the dot org) to serve our wounded warriors in California by teaching them to SCUBA dive. NAUI SCUBA Instructor. Handicapped SCUBA Association (HSA) Instructor. I have had blind, paraplegic, quadraplegic and double above the knee SCUBA students.
May 2010 Grandpa for the 3rd time. My oldest had a very healthy son (her second). October 2015 my youngest adopted my youngest grandson. Her and her husband had been his foster parents since October 2013.
SCUBA is what I do to keep my cool and feed the adreline junkie in me.
July 30, 2011 Premier of Documentary "Bubbles to Bullets" about the 501(c)(3) non-profit Disabled Veterans SCUBA Project I started.
