Meredith's Story
Life
I'm still in Tacoma--living two blocks from Stadium High School, as a matter of fact, just around the corner from the illegal parking spot I snagged most mornings before school. I am currently teaching English (I know, a SHOCKER, huh?) at the Fort Steilacoom campus of Pierce College. Teaching is actually my second career: my first choice, immediately after college, was politics. I worked for the WA State Democratic party during that dreadful 2000 presidential election and continued on after that as an assistant to an education lobbyist in Olympia. I then spent two years with Washington NARAL (the "political arm" of the reproductive rights movement) before the fallout from the even more disastrous 2004 presidential election left me thinking that I needed a new, and entirely different, job. nt the rest of the winter "finding myself" in Italy. I came back determined to finish my master's degree (which I'd started right after college, then abandoned) and find pleasant work in a non-competitive environment. I started teaching at Pierce in the fall of 2005; things have been (mostly) happy and peaceful since. When I'm not teaching, I'm usually at home, cooking, eating and drinking with my roommates, but I can often be found sipping beer or wine at certain Stadium District establishments (where I've gotten reacquainted with several long-lost '07 alums!) or seeing movies at the Grand Cinema. When I have time and money (which is not very often), I travel. I'm spending my spring break this year in Italy (again), visiting places I missed the last time AND visiting my best friend, who is living in Sicily for the semester.
