Merel's Story
Who am I, really? What a funny question. I am now exactly who I have always been. That being, a hopefully peaceful person that has never lived within the 'box.'
It took me a long time to 'join' classmates simply because I have had no desire to revisit SPHS. Don't misunderstand me, when I speak of San Pedro, I tell people that I was born and raised in heaven by two wonderful angels. I LOVED MY HOME TOWN. It's certainly different now - and - when I was a child, San Pedro was the very finest place on earth. It's simply that my time in high school was NOT fun for me. I wasn't cool. I had friends and was then and am now thankful for their laughter. Aside from this, I got through the "Day's of the Living Uncool' simply by staying quiet and doing my thing to the best of my ability...which included my music.
A story that sort of puts the whole thing in prespective for me: Not that many years later, after having spent four great years as the drummer in a band called The Sunshine Company, I was performing at The Universal Ampitheater with Loggins and Messina...I was proudly the drummer in that great band it's entire life - both on stage and on the recordings. After the show, I heard my name being called and I looked up to see that the voice belong...Expand for more
ed to a really beautiful young woman She reminded me of who she was...a hugely popular classmate from SPHS. She yelled..."It's ----, let me come back stage...lets get together. It's been so long...etc." I thought "wow, here's a person that would not look at me let alone give me a smile when I was in high school and now that I'm 'cool' things are different. Great lesson in life. I didn't go find her. I am glad.
Now, thirty-five years later, I've traveled a couple million miles to perform before millions of people. I have spent some hard years with drugs and have been straight for the past twenty-five. All in all, I have been totally blessed in my life and would not change a thing.
These days, I have a recording studio in Austin and have become a rather successful record producer. For the past eighteen years, I have been married to a most incredible woman by the name of Sarah Pierce. Younger and far more beautiful than me...thank God, she is an incredible singer/songwriter in her own right. I still travel a lot, perform often, and I am far more healthy than I deserve - as my dear father would say...la mia vita è bella!
So, for those of you that might read this, I pray for you a life filled with great blessings and dreams fulfilled.
