Merrie (Spencer)'s Story
Right after graduation from high school my family and I moved downstate. I enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1974 and was transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado where I met my husband Dave in 1976. We met on August 9 and married on August 16 of the same year. I left the Army in 1979 and went into civil service. Dave remained on active duty until his retirement in 1993. On Dec 19, 2023 Dave died from a service connected cancer.
We've lived in Colorado, Kansas, and Germany; finally retiring in Colorado Springs, CO. Our youngest daughter, Anna, married a soldier who served in Iraq, finally being medically retired after two tours. ry nurse at the local hospital. They are the parents of our two granddaughters and an unknown gender due in February.
Our oldest daughter, Sharal, followed a much different route but went to work for USAA and worked herself up to Center Manager. They moved her and her family from Colorado Springs to Baltimore and now to Jacksonville, NC. She and her husband are the parents of our three grandsons.
My job went virtual in 2013 about the same time Dave was laid off from his job in Denver, CO. We took that opportunity to move to Jacksonville, NC ourselves and are now with in 20 minutes of each daughter. Dave was able to start at a new job the Monday after we moved here.
Life is good! God is good! I never would have seen myself here ... ever! LOL
