Mertis's Story

Life Formerly named Mertis Dorsey, became Mertis Brown before graduation. I am now Mertis Granger and have walked with the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour. I was ordained in 1984. I am a wife, a mother of three children and two step-children, and the proud grandmother of 8 beautiful grandchildren. I am Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors for a non-profit organization reaching out to our youth to help them become and/or stay involved in agricultural activities such as gardening, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, animal husbandry and other outdoor activities. Before retiring in 2003, I worked for the Federal Government for 36 years. I was in the field of computers for 33 years. For those of you who really knew me, I am not the Mertis Dorsey Brown you remember in High School. I was married very young while still in school. You probably know that my husband died young and so have many of our classmates. We are very blessed to be able to talk with each other. My closest friends know that I was suspended in my last year of High School for fighting and did not actually graduate from Vashon. I graduated from O'Fallon Tech but my heart and all my love is with the students I grew up with you at Vashon. Vashon is where I attended the sock hops, the parties, the dances, the basketball games, and the shoe-shine parlor. Most of these are the students I still remembe...Expand for more
r most in my heart as far as my old mind will allow. School I was a member of Ms. Smallwood's advisory class. I think that she inspired me most as she took many of us to her home. It was beautiful and that is all I remember about it. I remember her telling us that we could have homes like that or even better. I can really say that she seemed to care about her students beyond just teaching and going home. I became pregnant in my Junior year. I am not sure but I believe Ms. Smallwood knew it and did not turn me in. Therefore, I finished the school year and had the baby over the summer. I know that our Spanish teacher knew it. I just can't remember her name but I can see her face clearly. I remember Mr. Fox, our math teacher. He use to walk up the steps like a sly fox so I can not forget him. He was old then so I don;t think he is still around. I remember that all the students in Ms. Smallwood's class were Track I students. They were all very smart and I was glad to be among them. I had several fights in school. I think it was because I wore glasses and seemed quiet. I was suspended for fighting in my senior year and fininshed at O'Fallon Tech. Therefore, I am an alumni without a home. All my friends went to Hadley-Vashon but I graduated from O'Fallon Tech. I can only remember Albert Taylor from that O'Fallon Tech because he went to Vashon and was raised in the same neighborhood.
