Rob's Story

Just visit my site rmfx.com I have had quite a journey in my 30+ years since Westwood High. I have traveled the world, worked on dozens of Hollywood films, even ran a corporation of my own for a time. I am the proud uncle of 3 beautiful nieces, and 4 awesome nephews. Through it all, I have never lost my interest in drawing and creativity. I never forgot the inspiration and creative drive I found in Mr. Medley's art class, or Ms. Benjamin's Sci-Fi and Creative writing classes. After high school, I studied Television and Motion Picture Production at Scottsdale Community College, where I produced a couple of little student films, while working in the television studio after hours. I also continued my interest in Japanese culture, taking up studies in Japanese language and Karate. Just like when I was in high school, I often found myself sketching in my notebooks between classes, and jotting down plot lines for stories. I was determined to find a way to make a living doing what I love to do. In 1995, things were looking up in my professional and personal life. I met Mitsue, my wife to be, just in time for the new year. In the fall of 95, I was finally able to realize my childhood dream of becoming a cartoon animator, when I joined Fox Animation Studios in Phoenix, AZ. My work included animation on the Don Bluth film "Anastasia", and concept art on "Titan A.E." I met many friends there, and it was a great introduction to the motion picture industry. In 1998, Mitsue and I were married, and soon I received an offer to move to Hollywood to work on "The Iron Giant" for Warner Brothers. We borrowed $2000 from my parents, packed up the cat and all our posessions, and set off for our new life in California. Living in California was far different from what I was used to, growing up in Arizona. Things were much more expensive, like gas and rent. And forget about buying a house on an assistant animator's wages! The same kind of houses I'd seen in Gilbert AZ for $250k were upward of one million d...Expand for more
ollars in So Cal. It was also pretty bizarre to suddenly run into movie stars in the most unexpected places--Tyra Banks in the elevator, Tom Cruise in the hallway, Devon Aoki in the local Bed Bath & Beyond?! Once I was walking from the parking garage to work, and ended walking through the middle of a movie shoot with Jason Statham that turned out to be a scene in the film "Crank"! Working on "The Iron Giant" was a great experience. I got to work with many legends of the animation industry, and met up-and-coming director Brad Bird, who would later make his own move to 3D films with "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille". But the second golden age of animation that began in the late 80s had already started to fade, just as a wave of non-Disney animation studios had joined the party. Traditional animated films were on the way out, and an increasing number of films were being made overseas, or were completely 3D. The future belonged to Pixar and Dreamworks. With the impending death of the American cartoon, I had to quickly retool my skills for the computer graphics market. Having developed some 3D skills, I started to get work on major motion pictures and worked at a number of visual effects studios on various high end movies and commercials. My list of credits includes The Amazing Spider Man, The Last Airbender, Elf, Hugo, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and Blade III. In 2014, I got an opportunity to work at Lucasfilm in the San Francisco area, where I have had the fortune to work with many of the people who made some of my favorite films of the 80s and 90s. My recent work includes Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Warcraft, The Oroville, and the Lemony Snickets series on Netflix. I occasionally teach online courses in visual effects. Mitsue and I have made our home in the Napa Valley area. We are the proud parents of two dogs, and we like to enjoy the outdoors in Northern California. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2018! And that's my life.
