Sara's Story

Life After graduating from UCSB with a degree in Literature and Art History, I was accepted into the Master program at CSUN. I pursued a masters in Literary Theory and Rhetoric while living in Northridge. Then in 2003, I purchased a 3 bdr home. In retrospect, it was unnecessary to purchase a family home. Taking care and renovating a house is challenging and at times monumentally frustrating; but, I have to admit its been quite rewarding.I spend my time designing, painting, shopping, and yes..more shopping...going to plays...concerts...museums..etc..! I also work out about four to five days a week. I spend time with friends ... we talk about work...life...politics...social issues...future goals...and other things...you know... gossip...and I am an avid blogger. I visit Santa Barbara as often as I can...I go to Santa Barbara about once a month. I have no kids...but I have a niece and three nephews...they're my kids. I'm involved in their lives. I ask them about school, their grades, friends, interests, and I attend as many sporting and school events as time allows. The best part of my life in my independence. I am financially independent; therefore, I come and go as I please.I plan to do a lot more traveling soon...well as soon as I finish remodeling my house.. School I remember high school being filled with silly moments, interesting events , and an overall great time. I remember my classes;I especially remember my honors English and Chemistry classes. Ms. Koetke was strict and serious, but most of all challenging. At times I didn't appreciate her making us act out Shakespeare scenes,..and I knew the only reason she had us do this was because she had been a Shakespearean actress in London...at least that's what she said. Overall, she was a great teacher ....her class was difficult but it really prepared me for the AP English exam. AP Chemistry with Mr. Baum...what can I say...I remember the 10 day final exam followed by a week of lab work....and the lab work had to be done after school! I guess that's why, at that time, Fillmore High had one of the top science programs in Ventura County. Well...I also remember being part of...Expand for more
the Fillmore Flashes basketball and cross country teams. But most of all, I remember the Friday night football games. I attended every home game. My friends and I would share popcorn, watch the game, and gossip about who liked whom and who was dating who. I also remember being class Senator my sophomore year; we were in charge of all class activities..including the dances. Life was sooooo easy back then. I earned straight A's, played sports, was involved in student council, and had great friends. And what can I say about the campus..., Fillmore High School is beautiful. With its Spanish architecture, palm trees, green lawns, and open campus, it is outrageously gorgeous. College I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in English Literature and a Minor in Art History. After UCSB, I was accepted into CSUN's masters program under the English Department(the only grad school i applied to...the only one i could afford). College has been, so far, the best time of my life. I learned so much about people and life. after having taken my last final and thinking..."God, I don't want to leave". Of course, it didn't hurt that UC Santa Barbara is located right smack on the beach..and it's beyond beautiful. I plan to return...as soon as I can afford one of those Spanish homes across the Mission. It'll happen. After UCSB I moved to Nortridge and attended CSUN as a graduate student. Living in the valley is nothing like living in Santa Barbara...people are mean..rude...and superficial. Workplace This will be my 14th year teaching 8th grade Honors English. My work is demanding and stressful but well worth it. I take my job seriously and whole-heartedly believe that if our children don't make it, neither will our country. Besides teaching, I am a Support Provider (mentor) for BTSA (for the State Department of Education).I am also an English Cadre Member for the Los Angeles Unified School District; I help design and write an 8th grade English curriculum for all of LAUSD. So, I'm either teaching or attending conferences all year long. Military I didn't join the military and would never consider doing so. Yet, I support those who have.
